"He alerted nobody, and in fact turned it over to American media who was already covering it."
(sigh). You're STILL missing my point -- it would be entirely gratuitous and unnecessary, if anything, dangerous. Like I said, wild speculation. A "trophy" recording, nothing more. If not for who he might be it wouldn't even be worth mentioning, except for the fact that a Chinese student in the US for an entire eight months *should* have no real reason to have such a beef with so many people without some prodding (and if he bought the guns 35 days ago then less than that). Maybe the shooter was a nut, but dammit, something pushed him over the edge. I say investigate all avenues -- no witch hunts, no masses of people with torches going after this guy, just check it out. Like I said, I don't believe in coincidences.

To not check out this attack as terrorist would be reckless. Too well organized to be an act of passion.
This was a military type attack that was meant to do the maximum damage with minimal risk. The bomb threats etc is far too professional. This guy was a trained killer.

something pushed him over the edge Honor, especially in educational success, is a HUGE deal in Asian cultures--Korean, Chinese and Japanese. Failure in education can doom you in that society. Asian students are under enormous pressure that most Americans would not understand, I think. I have no idea what pushed this young man over the edge, but it doesn't have to be any one thing, idealogy or disturbance. He could be unstable with high-expectation parents.
I don't believe in coincidences.
Coincidences happen all the time. But we should never assume that they are coincidences. As you say, all facts should be thoroughly investigated.
