Agree 100%. Virginia Tech administration and police carry a lot of blood on their hands. I cannot believe how stupid and careless they are. They should go to jail.

Good grief folks! This is ridiculous!! These people were dealing with an extremely fast moving situation. You cannot possible expect people to have ALL the answers, or even all the pertinent QUESTIONS in such a short time.

I haven't seen anything in this situation that would argue for anyone to go to jail, especially if the actual killer is dead. Please cut the authorities some slack here; they're dealing with the murders of at least 31 people who they considered their college family.

Has anyone noticed that all the tv interviews are of people/students that aren’t first person witnesses. With 40 or 50 people shot, you’d think they could find people who actually saw the shootings.

To CBS and Couric's credit, they just televised a powerful interview with a student wearing a sling on his right arm...describing the ordeal....how he used his tennis shoe to gain traction on the linoleum floor to keep the classroom door barricaded...while the shooter pumps slugs into the wood...while his arm was bleeding...and dialing 911 with his left hand.

Helleva brave young man.

Susi

The first shooting occurred 2 hours before the second shooting where the big massacre took place. They should have closed the campus after the first shooting, period.

I have to agree with DCBryan, actually. Here's what went wrong:

1. In 2006, the VA administration managed to whip up enough support in the state house to shoot down a bill that would allow properly licensed and trained students to carry concealed weapons on the VA Tech campus. In Virginia, carrying a concealed firearm is lawful on campus... With the sole exception being state-owned VA Tech. Now look what's happened: Students were sitting ducks with no means to resist being killed. Again, well-meaning gun control fuels the greatest school massacre in modern US history.

2. The police response time was two hours between the first shooting and the second spree. No students were notified by campus email. The only indication to most students that there was a dangerous situation on campus was when they encountered the gunman shooting at them even though he'd been killing students for over two hours.

I am sorry, but I am not going to cut the VA Tech authorities any slack for a situation that they partially created just because they're feeling sad at the moment. Since when does grief negate responsibility?

go to jail? no, I don’t think anyone is suggesting the university people should “go to jail”. this isn’t a question of personal criminal liability. its just mismangement and poorly thought out approach to this incident, which did nothing to protect the students.

I agree, after the facts are assembled and the dead buried and the mourned...we will be in a possession to ascertain if the authorities share some measure of blame.
