The picture shows a law enforcement officer pointing an "assault rifle" at a suspect he is preparing to take into custody. I don't think you can see the weapon the suspect may or may have not used in the shootings in the picture.
One dead from Johnson Ambler the other are from Norris Hall.

Yeah, I just googled the story, which I should have done before I posted. Anyway, he was not a Viet vet, but served as a Marine for several years which lead up to Vietnam. He was a sharpshooter and his specialty was hitting running targets at long distance. He killed 14 people, including his wife and mother, both of whom he killed the night before, and wounded dozens of others. He was from a wealthy, but disfunctional family with a violent father that he could never please. He was also found to have a small brain tumor at autopsy, which may have contributed to his depression.

Breaking News: 22 dead in Va. Tech shootings, campus police say

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Gunfire erupted in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing at least one person and leaving 21 injured before a suspect was arrested, authorities said.
A reporter talking on CNN reports that the gunman has died, but police haven't confirmed that.
On the Web site, Tech reported the shootings at opposite ends of the 2,600-acre campus at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and said there were "multiple victims" at Norris Hall, an engineering building.
The university said there were multiple victims. Government officials with knowledge of the case said there were seven to eight other "casualties."
Wonder if William Morva had any rants on the web ... like a MySpace or something to that effect.
CNN has this on their web site: “Police have one shooter in custody, and as part of routine police procedure they continue to search for a second shooter,...”

The only two hospitals in the area, aside from Tech’s on-campus health clinics are Montgomery Regional and Roanoke Memorial, as well as a VA hospital in Roanoke.
