Republican '08 options disappoint evangelicals (Land: would vote for Hillary over Rudy)
Washington Times ^ | April 16, 2007 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 04/16/2007 4:29:04 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

***... Mr. Giuliani maintains a big lead over his Republican rivals in the polls yet has all the wrong policy positions on social issues such as abortion and homosexual rights considered key to cultivating Christian conservatives. However, some evangelicals and pro-life Catholics seem willing to overlook his faults -- including his two divorces -- in the belief that he is the only Republican actually running who can defeat the Democratic nominee in 2008.

Still, Mr. Giuliani and conservative Christians "probably have irreconcilable differences on life and family and that kind of thing," said Mr. Falwell, adding, "I couldn't support him for president."

Nor is Mr. Dobson in Mr. Giuliani's cheering section.

"I do not believe that the current excitement over Giuliani will continue," Mr. Dobson told U.S. News & World Report.

Richard Land, president of the Religious and Ethics Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, takes a hard line against virtually all the major Republican candidates. He says he'd vote for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, New York Democrat, over Mr. Giuliani if the 2008 presidential race came down to such a choice. And if Mr. Giuliani wins, "he'll do so without social conservatives," Mr. Land said. .....

But the fact that he would vote for Hillary in ANY circumstances just shows why the SBC is back on their downhill slide.

Funny, the SBC ain't the ones saying the GOP needs to ditch the pro-life agenda. Rudy and his boosters are.

So just who is sliding downhill here?

Anything here you like?

So, yet again, you try to change the subject. It's the favorite tactic of Rudy boosters.

How do you reconcile being pro-life with Rudy saying the GOP should move past the abortion issue?

Hey Rooty Tooters, why do you care what this guy does? You been telling us socons, over the past few months, to go to he!!. You and your “invincible” leader have made it clear that you don’t need us in the party. Now you guys get your wish and you start acting like a bunch of cry babies.

What many of us have been trying to tell you over the past few months is—if you are going tell us socons to “get out of the party” then be prepared for the consequences. It will be you, and you alone, who will be responsible for Hillary becoming the next POTUS if Rudy gets nominated (he won’t).

Your message has been loud and clear, now the socons are responding. Let’s see how it works out for you not having us conservatives in the republican party—you hypocritical liberals.

“Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we’re for, not if we’re a party that’s known for what we’re against.” Asked about abortion, [Giuliani] said, “Our party has to get beyond issues like that.”

If you’ll look, I was posting to your #17 (while you were posting to me).

Abortion as well as other issues are discussed in the quoted material in Post #20.

Rudy will split the party and he will lose because of it.

Obviously, you don’t know me. I don’t even like Rudy, he’s anti-gun and pro-abortion. I wasn’t attacking Land for criticizing Rudy, I was criticizing Land for praising Hillary, who’s about as pro-abortion as anyone can get.

I would much rather see Hunter as the nominee than Rudy. Try not to burn bridges to your allies.

That's a dodge. You'll be voting for Hillary in that case. How do you think Bill Clinton won 8 years when he never won 50% of the vote?

Abortion as well as other issues are discussed in the quoted material in Post #20.

Rudy's most current views on abortion:

“Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we’re for, not if we’re a party that’s known for what we’re against.” Asked about abortion, [Giuliani] said, “Our party has to get beyond issues like that.”

You can't spin that, no matter how hard you try. Rudy just told pro-lifers to go pound sand. He is attempting a hostile takeover of the GOP.

No, he'd be voting third party.

You and your ilk act like GOP voters are serfs and our votes should be automatic.

And that attitude is how the GOP loses elections.

Rudy will split the party and he will lose because of it.

Evangelicals can sit on their hands and when Rudy wins they'll be like the black community that believes their leaders and have no say. Hope you enjoy that.

He's not praising Hillary. He's showing just how revolting pro-abort Rudy would be as the GOP nominee.

And how have fiscal conservatives and small-government conservatives fared under the Bush administration?

Turnabout is fair play.

The republican party can not win without the conservative base. They have lost everytime they have tried it.

That shows the importance of a candidate who embraces all forms of conservatism.

How hysterically funny you are! You tell me I am automatic. Good grief - such humor.

I want to win the election so the United States will have a strong defense and solid conservative principles - educational choice, health care choice, private retirement accounts, low taxes, people told they need to be self-reliant, and yet you tell me I should listen to you and be a one issue voter.

Perhaps in the primaries, but how far will a 100% ACU rating get someone in the general election in this present political climate?

2006 should have been a wakeup call.

“Turnabout is fair play.”

I don’t argue about what’s fair or not fair. I’m simply saying, if you tell us for months and months that you don’t need us, then don’t start griping about it when the socons start leaving the party. You’re getting what you asked for—be happy. But don’t come back in 2009 and blame us for Hillary getting elected. If you think Rudy is electable then get him elected without us, and take the blame if he doesn’t.
