COWARDS KICK AWAY ANOTHER PIECE OF AMERICA'S SOUL
By KINKY FRIEDMAN
April 15, 2007 -- Author, musician and former Texas gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman has been friends with Don Imus since 1975, when they met on stage at The Bottom Line.
I MET Imus on the gangplank of Noah's Ark. He was then and remains today a truth-seeking missile with the best bull-meter in the business.
Far from being a bully, he was a spiritual chop-buster never afraid to go after the big guys with nothing but the slingshot of ragged integrity. I watched him over the years as he struggled with his demons and conquered them. This was not surprising to me.
Imus came from the Great Southwest, where the men are men and the emus are nervous. And he did it all with something that seems, indeed, to be a rather scarce commodity these days. A sense of humor.
There's no excusing Imus' recent ridiculous remark, but there's something not kosher in America when one guy gets a Grammy and one gets fired for the same line.
The Matt Lauers and Al Rokers of this world live by the cue-card and die by the cue-card; Imus is a rare bird, indeed - he works without a net. When you work without a net as long as Imus has, sometimes you make mistakes

Hmmmm...so the I-Man is now compared to Jesus Christ? Interesting claim from one of Imus' cronies...
It is, and on target too. Im a little bit older than Imus, and we both grew up in an age when it was said that people learned from their mistakes, and apologized when you had offended someone. As Pat Buchannan, another old white guy in his seventh decade said a few days ago, Don Imus asked for forgivness and didn’t get it.
He said list, not comparison.
But they aren’t making Jews like Jesus anymore....
It's kind of like jeff Dalmer getting Hannibal Lecter to be his defense lawyer.
There was a great line on the opening SNL skit last night when the Sharpton character said, "Nothing strikes more fear in the heart of a hip-hop artist than the firing of 68 year-old white man."
Why did he go out of his way and apologize to Sharpton on SHARPTON'S radio show?
A truthteller...especially a cranky old codger like Imus should have grabbed the opportunity to flip the figurative bird to the race hucksters and dared for them to bring the debate out in the open.
Only then would the country be able to discuss the hypocrisy that exists in what is deemed an insult versus artistic license.
Because his addiction to money and fame overpowered his supposed dedication to truth-telling.
The irony of it is, he thought that by groveling he would salvage his career.
He thought wrong. Race-baiters like Sharpton and Jackson don't play win-win.
Jeez Kinky, I knew you and Imus were old, but Wow!
A very weak and distant comparison perhaps, but a more foolish one would be to switch Imus for Sharpton.
Well, Imus’s words did scar that one basketball player for life (sarc).
Nonsense.
Imus was the quintessential cheap shot artist. Period.
Maybe, he heard Code Pink shouting in his ear, “Pull out now.” When Cowardice and surrender are in the air, predators strike from every direction.
A fascinating pairing. What species were they?
Fortunately Fields’ audience didn’t include kids or dogs.
Thanks for the post, I had the opportunity to see Imus’s generosity having worked at Hackensack General Hospital where Imus’s name is not only revered but attached to the Children’s Cancer Center. Good luck Imus & thanks.
:-D )))
