The weather forecast for Saturday's global warming rallies in Grand Rapids and Holland calls for snow and cold rain and temperatures in the 40s -- about 10 degrees below normal.
For some, this might make global warming a tough sell.
"I've thought of that," said Lisa Locke, associate director of the West Michigan Environmental Action Council, which is organizing the three Grand Rapids "Step it Up" rallies.
"I think that's an easy excuse, but if we're really reasonable about it, we're not talking about individual weather on individual days," Locke said. "We're talking about something much larger, on a global scale, which science has been tracking for decades."
WMEAC is organizing rallies at three locations in Grand Rapids, among more than 1,300 rallies that day around the country. The Web-organized event was the idea of environmental activist Bill McKibben.
A rally also is scheduled at Centennial Park in Holland.
The goal is to send a message to Congress, "to let them know the extent of the concern in their communities for this issue, and the fact that really strong, aggressive initiatives need to be taken to make a significant difference."
Environmentalists want Congress to cut carbon emissions by 80 percent in the U.S. by the year 2050.
Scientists and environmentalists warn that global warming could change the character of Michigan: lowering water levels and raising water temperatures, altering the kinds of crops that will grow and leading to new invasive species.
The changes could be avoided with reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, they say.
At least some of the past century's 1-degree rise in global temperatures is due to the atmospheric accumulation of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases that are the byproducts of power plants, automobiles and other fossil fuel-burning sources, scientists say.
Opponents in the debate say natural events such as solar activity are causing the warm-up.
Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell is scheduled to attend two of the events, which will include music children's activities and the kick-off of a children's art contest.
Locke points out that the rallies are on the 95th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, which struck an iceberg near Newfoundland.
"They didn't see it coming, the tragedy," she said. "But we do."

This global warming bunch can’t even predict this weekend’s weather....it’s a far reach to hope they can predict the next century’s. (For that matter, they didn’t do very well on the tornado outbreak in Dallas either today.)
I hope these global warming protesters only get a little frostbite.

Considering that something like this has been a regular occurence for the last six months or so, if these people had two brain cells to rub together, they'd get a clue.
Something similar happened locally today and I blogged a bit about it.
See? Forty years ago, enviro-wacko Rachel Carson was right -- we're gonna freeze to death!
I'm starting to think the only way to deal with these loons is to put just as much pressure on Congress to increase carbon emissions so we don't freeze.

We could be entering another ICE AGE and the liberal scam of GW would still be going on....because it IS A SHAM.
And yet, when it's really hot out on any given "individual day", these same "reasonable" people claim it's due to Global Warming.
Science has been tracking weather "for decades" while the earth is, what, a billion gazillion decades old? Don't these loonies know how incredibly stupid they sound?
Even individual weather on individual centuries exposes this religious hoax.
On another note, I don't accept the argument that since Wx cannot be accurately predicted next week, it follows it cannot be predicted next Winter, decade, or century. Meteorology differs from Climatology. Of course, Climatology should not be used as the political crow bar the left is pushing.
At that time the weather was cooler, so the icebergs were further south. The climate can fluctuate greatly within a century. I think that by the One hundred ninetieth anniversary of the Titanic, the will have gone through one or more variations.
Global warming is serving the Left with two things:
1. It is a back door way for them to impliment Socialism (Just listen to the “Enviromentalists” calling for things like “Social Justice”
2. Gives them another issue to pressure the public, besides spinning the War on Terror (to make the US look bad) and the recent shootings (For gun control purposes)
well, ya know...it’s global warming that is actually CAUSING this snowstorm you see.
