U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Friday that radio host Don Imus' comments about the Rutgers University women's basketball team were "disgusting" and she was pleased he was fired.
Imus called the women players "nappy-headed hos" -- racist, sexist remarks that resulted in a barrage of protests and ultimately in the outspoken host losing his CBS Radio show, which was also televised.
"I'm very glad that there was, in fact, a consequence. I think that this kind of coarse language doesn't belong anywhere in reasonable dialogue between reasonable people," Rice said in an interview with syndicated radio show host Michael Medved.
Rice, the first black female U.S. Secretary of State and a former college professor, said the young women Imus targeted were fine athletes trying their best.
"It gets ruined by this disgusting -- and I'll use the word 'disgusting' -- comment which doesn't belong in any polite company and certainly doesn't belong on any radio station that I would listen to," she added.
Asked how she handled racist, sexist comments directed her way, Rice laughed and replied: "I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself. And I really don't care because, you know, I'm a mature woman

Very sad and disappointing to me that a U.S.Secretary of State would make such a statement.
Duhhhhh.......
I must have missed something - was Imus run out of town on a rail by government?
Sad and disappointing? LOL!
Now who exactly heard her say this? I for one did not. I’ve heard/read just too many out of context bs or just out and out lies....from the dumbass media types....
I don’t agree.
Rice is not a totalitarian. Imus used to insult her on the air in personal ways, and she probably was offended...
Whatever.
Man, they bash Peggy Noonan, the bash Condoleeza Rice...you know, FReepers can be their own worst enemies.
Is there such a thing as FRinos?
you heard it here first...

It's this type of insightful political reparte that makes the reader wonder if its author is really on the right website.
IMO, Condi Rice said more than you admit, in that she asserted that she was satisfied with the outcome. Since the outcome was that Imus was silenced from the media, I assume that Rice (and your) were satisfied with this. As a high federal official, I am offended that she said this and I am concerned with the mindset behind this opinion.
I have no “personal” grudge with Condi Rice, as you suggest. I am against federal totalitarianism, in any form or gradient.
It is within your right to call my opinion ludicrous. I don’t think that Gramsci would agree with you.
And there are enough REAL problems with government overreach to deal with. Making them up as you have done here n diminishes the real battle of a conservative to get overgrown government under control.
That should be our shared goal, should it not?
I have no idea how that stray ‘n’ got in there. :)
Imus is an Old Fart who forgot he was on TV and made stupid, racist comments. He deserved to be fired.
Now let’s fire Charles Barkley and Michael for all their really gross statements about white people.
I have not made anything up, but have merely interpreted Condi’s statement with a jaundiced eye (a right I have which I reserve for any statement by a government official and/or politician). We face many problems, INCLUDING government restrictions of our rights, especially free political speech, regardless of the party in power. Perhaps we only disagree in this instance. Thanks for being a patriot.
And thank you for being the same.
Bwa ha ha... You're a funny guy. In a word, no. Or how about another word, never. Truly, never. I'd vote for the used car salesman down the street before Hillary. I'd vote for Saddam Hussein before Hillary. He's dead, so he'd do far less damage than her. Even if he was alive, at least he was up front about his corruption...
The ensuing brouhaha over those comments was way over the top, and the penalty far too severe for the crime. However, you are exactly right. As a society we have become far too casual in our conversation and have lost our manners. Had Imus said this years ago, it would have been an issue. Had he used obsceneties years ago, he would have been fired, AND perhaps even blacklisted.
If you recall, she has been the subject of some very nasty, racist cartoons herself.
