CBS News ^ | Friday April 13, 2007 | Milwaukee_Guy

"...sources tell CBS News that the FDA had tracked at least one suspect batch of wheat gluten into the human food supply, quietly quarantined some products and notified the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention to watch for new patients admitted to hospitals with renal or kidney failure."

I said something about it being a test run for terrorist tampering in the human food supply. But on the dog lists people were already wondering whether this ‘human grade’ wheat gluten was only confined to dog food... didn’t make sense.

215 Entries from China in only one month (March 2007).

Just... wow!

I guess the janitorial union and the Quality Control workers union must be on strike.

I feel a need to let you know that most Chinese (at least the many we have met and dealt with) are warm and gracious people, eager to please, family oriented, and pro-American.

The "warm and gracious people, eager to please" part is correct if you're in a position to do something for them. They're family-oriented because the family unit is the ultimate source of favors - nobody gets a decent job in China without a family connection.

As to pro-American, they'll be glad to tell you all the good things you want to hear about Uncle Sam as long as they are beholden to you for some favor. My experience is that if you talk to a total stranger in his native language, all the anti-American bile stored up via the Chinese education system and the country's propaganda organs will come out. I have met exactly zero pro-American Chinese during my half-a-dozen trips out there. Most Chinese will, however, tell you what you want to hear, unless they don't need anything from you. In which case they'll tell you how they really feel.

Upside for Celiacs. They’ve been in training for the potential looming crisis!

"ChemNutra has an excellent record of compliance with all applicable regulations, but please know that as additional product safety recommendations are developed by the FDA, the Pet Food Institute and our customers, we will implement them immediately"

Why don't they do it themselves!!!!!!! Why wait for someone else to tell them how to implement stricter safety inspections? I have never bought those kind of wet food cans for my dogs because they always appeared smelly and disgusting to me. If I did I would never buy grocery store products again or anything that this company supplies or by Menu Foods..

BTW.......... I have to add that I have been buying my dog food from Sit Stay LINK They have the best customer service and send your order out immediately. Plus, I did order a treat that my dog would not eat and they refunded by giving me a gift certificate for the price of that item! I'm very happy with their food products and their service.

There is another supplier www.PetFoodDirect.com where I ordered and 6 days later called to find out where my order was and was told "Oh we're behind because of the petfood problem and it won't be shipped for another 2-3 days" I told them it would be a good idea to let people know this before they order and asked them to cancel my order. Next they sent me back an e-mail telling me the shipment may be too far along in the warehouse to stop it and they would let me know. I have not heard a peep from them since. Grrrr

My daughter has a friend who is a Celiac. She suffered for a few years until she got a proper diagnosis.

I’m an Atkins devotee so I have learned to carefully read labels and find alternatives.

Amazing how much hidden wheat turns up in products. I remember the some brand of ketschup may or may not have wheat in it.

Interesting excerpts from Thursday’s Senate Hearing,

Durbin: what is the involvement of the CDC was?

Sundlof: when we learned that the gluten was the cause, we asked the CDC to look into renal failure in humans.

Durbin: any evidence of increase renal failure?

Sundlof: we will need to check with CDC

Durbin: you said “there is no requirement pet food products have pre-market approval by the FDA, but the FDA ensures that the ingredients are safe and have appropriate function in pet food” it is clear that you did not inspect the wheat gluten so when you make that statement, it is a general statement that wheat gluten should be a safe ingredient

Durbin: who funds the AAFCO?

Nelson: self funded-

D: who pays for the publications

Nelson: industries, state officials

D: some of your funding comes from the industry that you are involved with

N: it’s an open process- the industry does provide advisers to regulate- we want to develop regulations

D: so what % of your budget comes from the industry that you are overseeing

N: I would have to get back to you- the assoc have several meetings a year we have one employee (she is the Asst Sec Treasury)

D: and that one employee is determining the safety of the pet food in America?

N: all done on a volunteer basis of committees

D: holds up ALPO can and reads the AAFCO required label - so when you talk about safety you mean, nutritional safety- so this doesn’t mean that any ingredient in this can is not contaminated - not necessarily safe

N: when I talk about safety, I talk about prevention of contamination

D: but AAFCO doesn’t inspect?

N: not my association

D: I’m challenging your term that pet food is highly regulated- there is no AFFCO regulation, no pre-market approval, no regular inspection, only 30% of these plants will be inspected, no penalty if they don’t report, no govt authority to recall a contaminated product, no mandatory standards, - it’s hard to conclude that this is a highly regulated product

I once asked our translator/driver/bodyguards once why the highways were so developed. His answer? “For the military.”

The exact same reason we have an Interstate Highway system...

Anyway let me see if I can understand your argument: It's all true, because someone wrote it (where there's smoke, there's fire); anyone who says otherwise is a communist, and you're unwilling to listen to any other opinions, or let facts get in the way.

You pegged it. Paul has some weird faith in anything the Chinese claim or anything someone says they said. He's pretty funny.

I am allergic to corn. I think there is even more corn than wheat added to products that you would never suspect unless you read labels.

I didn’t mean that all wild salmon is contaminated and I buy canned Alaskan too. But keep watching the news and maybe the FDA web site for news and updates.

Do you still have Bea?

Third world countries use human feces and insecticides banned in America in their grain fields. All I can say is, know where your flour, and your Wheaties come from!

However, the posts about supposed Chinese speeches concerning plans for Bio-Warfare are troubling. Having said that, I seriously doubt that the Chinese would use something as imprecise and ineffective as Rat Poison.

If it was sold to America, it wasn't imprecise.

Hey folks.... go check the manifest on the cargo vessels...

What was in the cargo hold of the ship before the wheat...

.... then compare it to the trans-shipping documentation at the various ports of call....

the grain trade is in deep do-do.........

its a fact they have used radio active metals as snaps and zippers in jeans and other clothes made in china-—it is a way of battling the enemy to death at the marketplace, as you say, just like poison food

Thanks for the reply.

I lost Bea the day after Thanksgiving. In retrospect, she showed all the symptoms of poisoning ... but this was before the recall. She was eating NutroMax small kibbles for small dogs, and NutroSenior. Since she was two months short of her 16th birthday, I thought it was just her time to go. Now I know it might have been prevented, and I feel sick at heart.

I wanted to ask about your Keesha, since you had said you prepare her food, she's OK, right?

IMO, China should be suspected of bulking all grades of gluten with pulverized melamine because the gluten is sold by the ton and melamine is heavier and cheaper.

This is not a matter of accidental contamination, but a deliberate attempt to increase profit over product safety by infusing alien materials into foods.
