Democratic politicians lose a soapbox with Imus
LA Times ^ | April 13, 2007 | Peter Wallsten

His show gave many of them a way to reach a national audience of white males -- a crucial voting bloc.

WASHINGTON — They came by the hundreds that hot August day in tiny Johnson City, Tenn., gathering on an asphalt parking lot to meet Rep. Harold E. Ford Jr. It was not just that he might become the state's first black senator. More than that, even in Republican eastern Tennessee, the Democratic congressman was a celebrity — a regular guest on Don Imus' radio show.

And today, with Imus' career in tatters, the fate of the controversial shock jock is stirring quiet but heartfelt concern in an unlikely quarter: among Democratic politicians.

That's because, over the years, Democrats such as Ford came to count on Imus for the kind of sympathetic treatment that Republicans got from Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity.

Equally important, Imus gave Democrats a pipeline to a crucial voting bloc that was perennially hard for them to reach: politically independent white men.

With Imus' show canceled indefinitely because of his remarks about the Rutgers University women's basketball team, some Democratic strategists are worried about how to fill the void. For a national radio audience of white men, Democrats see few if any alternatives.

Imus is a 'Rat, but he also liked to make negative comments about Hillary, so she comes out ahead with his being removed from the air. How much of the dump-Imus movement was being driven behind the scenes by the Clintons?

One of the TV programs this morning showed a map showing public reaction to the Imus firing--only 6 states had a majority favoring it (overall it was 45% in favor of him being fired, 55% against)--California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Wyoming, and Minnesota. It may have been an internet poll and therefore completely unscientific.

* Former President Bill Clinton took on Imus from the pulpit of the Old John Street United Methodist Church.

“The misfortune that befell Mr. Imus when he attacked the Rutgers basketball team . . . Now, the first thing I thought was, that guy did not watch the tournament, because those women were beautiful, fast, strong,” said Clinton.

“I deplore what Mr. Imus said. It was racist and it was sexist. What was really sad is, I thought, this must be one unhappy fella having to talk about somebody like [that].”

Where are the liberals going to go? To all the other programs on MSNBC, to CNN and Headline News, to C-SPAN, to Hannity & Colmes and the O'Reilly Factor (the only difference at Fox is that someone is allowed to talk back to them).

Fox tries to get 50% liberals and 50% conservatives. C-SPAN seems to aim at 75% liberals and 25% conservatives. The rest want 100% liberals & loony left, except for the Glenn Beck program.

Fox needs to LIMIT some of these liberals so I can watch their shows again. Fox is UNWATCHABLE with so many liberals on it!

Much humor potential in your post, especially with Der Schlick talking about “beautiful, fast, strong” women.

What is he doing in a pulpit, anyway?

It’s not just that there are so many liberals on Fox, but that most of them are so obnoxious. The calm, thoughtful ones who are worth listening to, like Mort Kondracke, are a vanishing breed.

I love it when they eat their own.

I think Boortz is right, though. He thinks the Lefty activists will be emboldened by this, and will try harder, soon, to go after others in talk radio.

.....came from some female consort of Olberman's ....

Yeah. Right! This guy may have started off in sports, but he's somewhere between pitching and catching. We may be seeing the start of a campaign to convince us that he's not a metrosexual, or worse.

Imus didn’t have the ratings, so he was an easy sacrificial lamb.

Now, the first thing I thought was, that guy did not watch the tournament, because those women were beautiful, fast, strong,” said Clinton.

So all the feigned outrage & high-tailing it to church is all about keeping black women on the Clinton plantation & keeping them from bolting to the Obama one. It's almost enough to motivate me to send Obama a check. Almost.
