Furor over Imus puts heat on other US broadcasters

...Cynthia McKinney, "looks like a ghetto slut."......Barack Obama is a "halfrican American." ....."Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies."...The comments by Boortz, Limbaugh and Beck were confirmed by the watchdog group Media Matters, which said the same public outcry that forced Imus off MSNBC and forced CBS Corp. to suspend his radio show for two weeks ought to be applied to others and that politicians did not deserve "racist, homophobic, sexist ridicule.".........

U.S. radio host Neal Boortz last year said, Cynthia McKinney, "looks like a ghetto slut."

Rush Limbaugh, in January called Barack Obama, whose father was from Kenya and his white mother is from Kansas, a "halfrican American."

And CNN host Glenn Beck, during an interview with Muslim congressman Keith Ellison, said, "Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies."

The comments by Boortz, Limbaugh and Beck were confirmed by the watchdog group Media Matters, which said the same public outcry that forced Imus off MSNBC and forced CBS Corp. to suspend his radio show for two weeks ought to be applied to others.

"It's the media's responsibility to hold these people accountable," said Karl Frisch, a spokesman for Media Matters.

All three men remain in their jobs, and Boortz was among a group of conservative radio hosts who met U.S. President George W. Bush in the White House last September.

Paul Levinson, chairman of the Department of Communications and Media Studies at New York's Fordham University, said Limbaugh and Ann Coulter were "already identified as crackpots" while Imus was more influential with the mainstream.

"Once someone is identified as beyond the pale, which is how Coulter and Limbaugh are identified, nobody ever takes anything they say all that seriously," Levinson said.

There is a BIG difference with Limbaugh. If any of his advertisers leave him hanging, his listeners will leave the advertiser hanging. ESPN’s Sunday morning NFL show is still feeling it.

The ‘rats goal is to shut down conservative talk radio before the ‘08 election cycle heats up.

As Coulter pointed out, famous is fair game and we should all celebrate good funny insults about people in the news. Ordinary people shouldn’t be insulted.

You can get away with a lot more on radio than TV.

I think we should not inhibit free speech in America. Let the marketplace decide.

The real race-baiters in this story are Sharpton, Jackson, and the organization of black journalists.

The overwhelming hypocrisy of MSNBC, David Gregory, Anna Marie Cox, et al is breathtaking.

Yup. This Imus character just picked on a bunch of college kids. That was pretty shoddy behavior. Had they been public figures, who would care?

Imus not a crackpot?

Watching Imus was like talking to an ignorant grouch with a bad hangover.

Remember the NAG boycott of Florida orange juice? A few women would demonstrate in front of a grocery and Limbaugh fans would go into the same store and buy out the entire stock of oj.

It would be easy for Imus to salvage his career. All he needs to do is call Condoleezza Rice a nappy-headed ho. That would be just fine.

It’s not like we would do it to Air America... if it were a viable station that is.

Shall I pull up the lib files? I can even go one better and pull up their representatives files? They don’t want to go there.

Fairness Doctrine redux.

My biggest problem is the FCC getting in on this threatening a broadcast license.

That is government infringing on free speech.

The quickest way for me to go buy a product is hear there’s a boycott of it.
