"This bill will help keep kids safe and give parents peace of mind" ............ it's for the children.

I can see the labels now: “Ted Kennedy’s”, “Hillary Clinton’s”, etc.

“Web sites with “harmful to minors” content on pages that are initially viewable to visitors must use the tag to be devised by the U.S. Department of Commerce or face civil fines”
And what about all the sites that are hosted overseas, you geniuses?

Simple. All internet traffic will be routed through a server at UN headquarters where they will examine what content is being view by who and how often, and they will screen what is aceptable content for each individual or group.

their “genius” is being able to pass off yet another tumor in the govt malignancy of totalitarian control as being “for the chirren”.....
To: JohnSheppard
Then future Web browsers used by minors could be configured to reject L18-labeled Web pages. Such software exists now. Parents need to exercise their responsibility for the Internet the same as they would block cable shows. The govt has no business going here. By the way I am sick of "for the children". It ranks up there with "we're from the govenment and here to help".

All they need to do is mandate that all pornographic web sites need to have a “.xxx” instead of a “.com”. That way, you could block all sites from your home.

Except for the fact that kids are able to defeat more computer safeguards than adults can even set up.
Just sit back, and one day soon they will plant RFI pingers in everyones foreheads and sensors in every monitor in order to keep kids from doing what kids do.

All they need to do is mandate...Who is "they" and what gives them the right to mandate it at all?

Operators of Web sites with conservative content must label their sites and register in a national directory or be fined, according to a new U.S. Senate proposal that represents the latest effort among politicians to crack down on Internet conservativeness. How long till is says this?

All they need to do is mandate that all pornographic web sites need to have a .xxx instead of a .com. That way, you could block all sites from your home. The vast majority of porn sites are hosted in other countries, whose governments would simply laugh at such "mandates".

The biggest threat to the the Internet is Senators who don’t have anything better to do than try to regulate the Internet.

By the way I am sick of "for the children". I remember another Freeper who said the same thing back in about 2000, and was absolutely pilloried for it here and on other forums.
Her comments were in reference to all the bogus nannystate crapola that so many have been embracing and while at the time it was primarily about smoking, she warned it would not stop there. As much as I miss her, I'm thankful she passed away before seeing just how horribly correct she was.
