Experts debate how scandal may haunt Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - There are days when Duke University President Richard Brodhead can barely bring himself to utter the word "lacrosse."

In a February address to a national higher education audience, he referred to "our difficulties this past year." At a recent gathering of Duke faculty, he called it "the event of a year ago."

On Wednesday, Attorney General Roy Cooper dropped all charges against the three former Duke lacrosse players accused of sexually assaulting an exotic dancer. The case may be over, but the pain will linger for the university. ....[snip]

[snip]...Just two years into his first college presidency, Brodhead oversaw a campus besieged by rumor, protest and nonstop media coverage. At first, he was criticized for not acting quickly enough to halt the lacrosse team's season. Then, as the case fell apart, Brodhead was demonized by others for not standing behind the accused players.

The faculty took a lot of heat, too. As the crisis reached a peak early last April, a group of 88 professors signed onto an ad placed in the student newspaper, The Chronicle. The headline said "What Does a Social Disaster Sound Like?" and the ad featured anonymous quotes from students who described a campus culture of racism and sexism, decrying "what happened to this young woman."

The ad did not mention the lacrosse team, but it was viewed by some as a condemnation of the players. It became a popular target of bloggers, a symbol of political correctness run amok. The professors who endorsed it received hate-filled e-mail for months......"

The faculty has not taken near enough heat! Each and every one of the, "group of 88" should have their asses kicked all over the campus! Too bad this was not a soccer team so that the kicks could be skillfully applied.

I hope these kids live well on the pension funds they'll take in a civil case against the "88".

"88" is a shorthand for Nazi pukes to recognize each other. It's appropriate that these fascists selected "88" as their trademark too.

If a student/parent combination could afford and get into a university like that they have many choices. Duke may lose applicants.

It would be nice to see alumni ask for the incompetent president to be removed or stop all contributions.

The MS Press has done a dispicable job on the Duke LX, especially the local Raleigh & Durham hacks and all the McClatchy Newspapers as well as the NYSlimes....

Agreed, but it'll never happen.

Today on ESPN's Around the Horn (a daily sports talk show) sportswriter Bill Plaschke of the L.A. Times apologized profusely for jumping the gun and reflexively believing the accuser without knowing any of the facts of the case. There are a lot more in his profession who believed as he did whose apologies won't be forthcoming.

The case may be over, but the pain will linger for the university. ....

Linger? At best they're going to have to pay the legal fees of the accused players which should run them in the neighborhood of $3 million dollars. I am assuming there will be punitive damages as well and who knows what that amount will be. Plus, the coach they fired for "allowing this to happen" now has a great case of wrongful termination. The "88" will likely be named in any civil suit as well. Linger just seems an inadequate description of what needs to happen. This issue it will lay under the floorboards of the university like Poe's telltale heart until those who put it there are removed and punished.

For my part, I hope these young men bankrupt Duke and the "88". As for Nifong, they will sue and I hope they crush him both professionally and personally and given the comments from the state Attorney General this afternoon, it sounds like the state is not inclined to lift a finger for Nifong. There is/was no excuse for any of this. None.

More importantly, what does one do when one runs up against a prosecutor like Nifong in a case that doesn't attract the attention of the national press?

Law enforcement and prosecution is generally out of control in this country.

They're just tax collectors and purveyors of political correctness in my book.

".... Agreed, but it'll never happen..."

I am sure that is right. People forget and the PC in so deep in Universities it is sort of a combination of herpes and roaches. You can't get rid of it.

Richard Brodhead must not be a southerner are he would be calling it “The Late Unpleasantness”.

...and if you don't have the money for a good defense.

The answer is that you are screwed. I though about what would some local poor Junior College students do in this situation? Time is what they would do and lots of it.

Even in this case had Nifong gotten to trial with a local Jury I believe he could get a conviction. This was a near thing.

The academic elites didn't think the proletariat would be smart enough to pick up on the coy "heil Hitler" they were proclaiming.
