RUDY RIPS HESTON'S TAKE ON GUNS, CRIME (From 1997; Says Gun Control is the Reason for Less Crime)
NY Daily News via LexisNexis ^ | 05/19/1997 | Bob Liff

Mayor Giuliani laid down the law to Moses yesterday, telling Charlton Heston that the city's gun laws did help reduce the homicide rate.

Heston, who delivered the law in "The Ten Commandments," said the city's plunging homicide rate shows that it is good police work not gun control laws that reduces crime.

"In New York City, until very recently, when Mayor Giuliani took office, it shared with Washington the worst murder record in America," Heston, who was recently elected a vice president of the National Rifle Association, said yesterday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"Both cities have absolutely Draconian prohibitions oh, never mind waiting periods," Heston said. "You cannot own a firearm in New York or Washington.

"Mayor Giuliani saw the light, though, and he changed his tack and started prosecuting criminals and throwing them in prison for long periods, and since he started doing that, the crime rate in New York has gone down," he said.

But Giuliani, who thanked Heston for the kind words about his crimefighting efforts, said the actor was wrong about why the city crime rate went down.

"It says to me that gun control works," Giuliani said of the drop in homicides. "New York City has the toughest gun control laws in America and it's reduced shootings by guns by more than 60%. If the rest of America could do what we're doing, then we'd probably get another 30% or 40% reduction."

— He believes in a law that keeps hand gun’s out of the hands of street thugs...

Think carefully now:

1) Criminals do not obey laws, therefore, no law will disarm them.

2) Citizens obey laws, so gun-control laws disarm them.

Gun-control advocates deliberately set up a situation where the good people are at the mercy of the evil people. Not very nice.

Where is Pissant tonight? You took his job away???

EVERYBODY's job on Free Republic is to expose liberals - and that includes Giuliani. You seem to have forgotten that. Leave Pissant alone, he's doing precisely what he should be doing when he exposes Giuliani's liberal record. If you don't like FReepers exposing liberals, then I suggest you go find another website where they don't do things that annoy you so much.

— Oh puleeze - I have friends who had guns during Rudy’s term as mayor and still have them.

For the record:

How long have they had them?

What was their occupation?

Were they allowed to carry them concealed or openly upon their person?

I ask because, depending on the answers, your statement may be considered deceptive.

The imaginations of a great many seriously deluded people.

He will take your gun. This man knowsnothing outside of NYC. Very myopic, and dangerous!

Actually I’d say the real reason he had less crime is because of his very effective reorganization and dramatically increased size of the NYPD as well as other major upgrades to emergency services. He did do a lot great things like that for NYC - an awesome mayor. However, his stands on other issues he would be able to affect as president is simply not something I could, and will not, support.

This is why I would NEVER vote for Rudy. He does not support the Constitution of the United States.

I have always despised those that vote Demonratic, in order to get a better Republican.... But on the other hand, if we are to go to war over the second amendment, I would much prefer to have the Demonrats in power.

...Which were FASCISTIC to begin with! New York state is the only one I know of where you need to apply for permission to OWN a handgun! The only folks who get concealed carry in the city are retired donut munchers.

A number of states require permission to own each specific firearm.

Illinois requires state permission to own any type of firearm, but does not require purchasers to seek permission for each individual weapon. Private sales are legal, with no requirement to inform the state of the individual weapons purchased. Private sellers are required to keep a copy of the purchaser's Firearm Owner's ID number for ten years after a sale, but need not supply it to the police except on explicit request.
