Mayor Giuliani laid down the law to Moses yesterday, telling Charlton Heston that the city's gun laws did help reduce the homicide rate.
Heston, who delivered the law in "The Ten Commandments," said the city's plunging homicide rate shows that it is good police work not gun control laws that reduces crime.
"In New York City, until very recently, when Mayor Giuliani took office, it shared with Washington the worst murder record in America," Heston, who was recently elected a vice president of the National Rifle Association, said yesterday on NBC's "Meet the Press."
"Both cities have absolutely Draconian prohibitions oh, never mind waiting periods," Heston said. "You cannot own a firearm in New York or Washington.
"Mayor Giuliani saw the light, though, and he changed his tack and started prosecuting criminals and throwing them in prison for long periods, and since he started doing that, the crime rate in New York has gone down," he said.
But Giuliani, who thanked Heston for the kind words about his crimefighting efforts, said the actor was wrong about why the city crime rate went down.
"It says to me that gun control works," Giuliani said of the drop in homicides. "New York City has the toughest gun control laws in America and it's reduced shootings by guns by more than 60%. If the rest of America could do what we're doing, then we'd probably get another 30% or 40% reduction."
Despite all evidence to the contrary.
"New York City has the toughest gun control laws in America and it's reduced shootings by guns by more than 60%. If the rest of America could do what we're doing, then we'd probably get another 30% or 40% reduction."
Even though New York has had gun control legislation since 1911. Even though crime didn't go down until you enacted tougher crime-fighting measures. You still think GUN CONTROL solved the problem.
Eesh.
Stop Rudy ping!
Where is Pissant tonight? You took his job away???
More importantly, why are you supporting a candidate who favors gun control?
The more I hear of Giuliani the more I like Duncan Hunter.
lets see .abortions, gun control, gay civil unions, and Terri Schiavo .what else can we blame one man for?? Did you guys forget something yet?
Giuliani isn’t in favor of gun control. He was just supporting what his constituents wanted. It’s not like he claimed that gun control would be a good thing for the whole country.
/yesterdays line.
What will it be now that this is out?
What a boob. What about during NYC bad-old days in the 1970s, when muggings and murders were a part of life. Gun control existed then too Hizzoner.
Rudy just cracked down on criminals and empowered the police. Gun control had nothing to do with it.
Nah, just got asked a question about a certain terrorist shooting in 1997, so I did a little digging. Found this.
What I’m concerned with is how you’ve come out and said that gun control works, despite all historical evidence to the contrary.
OH REALLY? And none of the Mayors before Rudy enforced the laws on the books. When Koch and Dinkins were mayor the street thugs were running rampant. Rudy came on board - enforced the existing gun laws and the city was cleaned up.
I recall 2001 and 2002, where good FReepers who detested the socialism of the Clintons were suddenly excusing no child left behind, the medicare expansion, etc.
That same thing is going on here. Both surprising and pathetic.
Simple - the laws were not enforced by the police and by the mayors before Rudy came on board. The police department was revamped and increased. The existing gun control laws were enforced and the city was cleaned up.
This is why I would NEVER vote for Rudy. He does not support the Constitution of the United States.
The Mayor did the job, He did a good job, No one but Him is responsible for busting up the mob, cleaning up the city, and reducing the taxes - balancing the budget. If the worst anyone can say about Him on a professional level is that He believes in a law that keeps hand gun’s out of the hands of street thugs, I have no problem with Him.
Oh puleeze - I have friends who had guns during Rudy’s term as mayor and still have them.
Agressive crime fighting, NOT fascistic gun control laws, caused crime to go down. Thank Jack Maple and the guys at the NYPD who actually WORKED.
Rudy's first term was good, his second term was subpar. I still believe that he should stay in NY and send Spitzer or Schumer packing to South Florida.
Rudy enforced ALL LAWS. I lived there. One of his and Bratton's main points was to enforce the petty laws, like turnstile jumpings, on the theory that the people who did the petty crimes were the same ones who did the serious crimes. And they were right. Rudy was a great mayor, I will always appreciate him for that. (And, I would vote for him if I thought he was serious about the flat tax, and if I thought he would decrease spending like he did his first year as mayor).
But, your above statement is totally misleading. There is no way to know what degree his enforcing the gun laws mattered. In fact, I question your assertion that Dinkins didn't enforce the gun laws. As I recall, gun laws were some of the few laws he did enforce.
"Most of Clinton's policies are very similar to most of mine." - Rudy Giuliani
Why makes this idiot a Republican again?
