A soap manufacturer is coming to the defense of a punk rocker who was jailed after his bottle of liquid peppermint cleanser tested positive for GHB, a date-rape drug.
Germs drummer Don Bolles was arrested last week while on his way to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting with his girlfriend.
After police pulled the musician over for a broken taillight, they found a toiletry kit inside the vehicle containing denture glue, razors and a bottle of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap.
A field test of the soap indicated it was GHB, said Sgt. Evan Sailor of the Newport Beach Police Department. Bolles, whose real name is Jimmy Michael Giorsetti, was arrested on suspicion of felony narcotics possession.
The 50-year-old musician told the Los Angeles Times he has been using Dr. Bronner's for 35 years, adding that the organic ingredients help give him the complexion of a 15-year-old girl.
"A date-rape drug is the last thing I need," he said. "If anything, I need a way to keep the girls off me. They make my girlfriend mad."
Executives at Escondido-based Dr. Bronner's hired an attorney, Bruce Margolin, to represent the rocker.
David Bronner, the company's president, said police field tests of Magic Soap have occasionally indicated THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, because the soap includes hemp oil. But he said finding GHB in the product is "beyond belief. ... The field test must have been flawed or tampered with."
The Orange County Crime Lab is conducting more tests.
Bolles, who lives in Huntington Beach, was released from jail Sunday on $2,500 bond.
The Germs, a punk band formed in Los Angeles in the 1970s, are credited with influencing generations of musicians and popularizing mohawks. Bolles took his name from Arizona Republic journalist Don Bolles, who was killed in 1976 by a car bomb while investigating corruption.
The Germs broke up in 1980 after their 24-year-old singer, Darby Crash, committed suicide. The band reunited in 2005. Bolles was scheduled to play a London concert with the Germs in August.
NO hope for dope(s)
At least he uses soap.........
If you like living in the Land of the Free, clank your chains.
Somehow a broken taillight leads to a drug test on a bottle of soap in a shaving kit.
I think it’s real stand up for the manufacturer to pay for this guy’s defense. And on another note...complexion like a 15 year old? I need to check this stuff out!

it’s a pure Castile type soap, comes in different scents like peppermint and eucalyptus. The label has lots and lots of little tiny writing, esays on health, philosophies of life, and so on.
It actually is called Dr Bronners Magic Soap on the label.
I have some (peppermint and eucalyptus) and use it for a bunch of different things (the label suggests toothpaste, but I don’t recommend that, it somehow tastes a lot like soap).
I never knew it was a date rape drug!
A story to remember the next time the police say they “need more money”.
In Newport Beach, at least, they clearly have way too much time on their hands.
At least he is a modest man with no ego.
!!Heavy Sarcasm Warning!!
Check out that label.. lol.
Looks like some good stuff.
Not sure about the 15 y.o. part but. ;-)
Yes, but it is really great soap.
I used it in the shower this morning.
Maybe he has priors for GHB?
Here Mr. Giorsetti/Bolles forgot the “phrase that pays”: When asked if they can search your vehicle during a routine stop, always say “No.”. If the officer asks if you have something to hide, tell him/her, “My constitutional rights.”
Holey Moley! That’s some world-class word salad they got there!
LOL!
I used this stuff before when I backpacked because it’s all natural and when I’ve gone camping on the isolated outer banks islands because it suds in saltwater.
REALLY? I’m going to get myself some!
