Greenfield: Hypocrisy and Cowardice For Long-Time Guests To Boycott Imus
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Jeff Greenfield has called it "the ultimate act of hypocrisy and cowardice" for long-time guests of the Imus show [file photo] to stay away now. Greenfield, who is leaving CNN to return to CBS as Senior Political Correspondent, appeared on this morning's "Early Show" and was interviewed by co-host Julie Chen.

CHEN: Did you hesitate to go on the show yesterday?
GREENFIELD: No. If you have the benefit of being on his show for 15 years -- and there is a benefit -- there's visibility, if you have a book [you can promote it], and also, to be blunt, it's a great deal of fun -- the banter. To stay away from the show when he gets in serious and deserved trouble, seems to me the ultimate act of hypocrisy and cowardice. But I went on the show and told him, I think quite bluntly, where things stood and where they have to go. All of us, he and some of us as guests, have not really stepped up to the plate in looking at the way race has been used on that show as humor.
CHEN: You don't think he should be fired, do you?
GREENFIELD: No. If you can't get redeemed once people call you out for a racially inflammatory remark, then there are an awful lot of people in the public eye who shouldn't be in the public eye, not the least of which by the way is Reverend Sharpton, who has a radio show many years after the infamous Tawana Brawley case. I think [Imus] gets a chance to show he understands just how hurtful and offensive this was, and more to the point, how some of the kind of humor he's been doing needs to really just be changed.

I give Greenfeld props for this. Imus will see who his real friends are...and that’s worth its weight in gold.

The Left is rehabilitating Imus so that they do not lose his show as an outlet.

Imus’s show will become boring..resemble NPR, ratings will plummet..I figure he’ll “retire” in 12 months or so. What ironic, his home station, WFAN..all sports except in the morning drive time, is getting creamed by ESPN’s Mike and Mike...who talk only sports, and are quite funny. I usually listen to them for an hour when I take my run...so WFAN is losing the key demographic they want to attract. I’d bet they’d like to dump Imus if they could.

I wondered what all the liberals he always has on his show would do.

Waiting for someone to observe that all these supposedly “responsible” people have sat there and smiled for decades while Imus said things just as rude, mean and racist. This was nothing new. He’s been a sort of “Howard Stern light” since before Howard Stern.

The problem with what Greenfield is saying is that Imus won’t change because of this so Greenfield is being a little hypocritical too.

Sure Imus crossed the line, but I'm amazed at the elephant in the living room people are ignoring. Where did Imus pick this up? From rap music - this is how African-Americans routinely refer to women. And its gone mainstream - this crap is played in suburban high schools. Why aren't Al Sharpton and the feminazis lining up with Bill Cosby and saying this has to stop, African-American women shouldn't be spoken of this way by anyone.

I’m sure that Greenfield and these other Demo-hacks were 100% behind Trent Lott. I’m sure they are outraged that Robert Byrd was a KKK Grand Kleagle and then leader of the Senate Dems or that Hillary Clinton has repeatedly referred to those f***ing Jew-ba**ards. Spare me.

A few years ago, at least ten, I had a couple of African-American teenagers come to my door Halloween night dressed as and introducing themselves as "pimp" and "ho." My jaw dropped, but I gave 'em candy.

The feminists just don't get that the sex-soaked post sexual-revolution culture will not improve the status of women, it will demean and cheapen them. Taking Imus to the P.C. woodshed won't change it, either.

Imus’s ignorant remarks are a trivial compared to the way Greenfield’s industry has treated anti-white racist violence over the last 50 years or so. That’s a real racial scandal.

Who knew there was a benefit from going on this foul mouthed dirtbag’s show?

It may not change anything but it sure is fun watching the PC crowd twist into contortions trying to save this s***bag.

I have never cared for Imus.

However, if blacks don't like what he said, then they should be the first to say, "I'm not going to talk like that anymore."

If it is OK for blacks to refer to each other in that manner, then it should be OK for anyone else to do the same.

After all, imitation is the highest form of flattery.

A lot of rock-throwing blacks are living in glasshouses on this issue.

More hypocrisy... Obama is on MSNBC saying he won’t go on Imus’s show anymore, which is broadcasted by MSNBC.
