Casey opposes stem cell bill (PA Democrat will vote pro-life)
The Sentinel Online ^

WASHINGTON — After months of meetings with people on both sides of the stem cell debate, Sen. Bob Casey said he will oppose a bill that would clear the way for government financing of new embryonic stem cell research.

Legislation coming up for debate today in the Senate would lift President Bush’s 2001 ban on taxpayer-funded research of embryonic stem cells developed after that time.

In an effort to win the support of lawmakers like Casey who have backed the ban, sponsors included a provision stating that Congress endorses all types of stem cell research. A similar bill passed Congress last year, but was vetoed by President Bush.

Casey, D-Pa., has been lobbied by bill backers attempting to garner the two-thirds Senate support needed to override a presidential veto.

Casey, who is Catholic and opposed to abortion, said in a statement released Monday he doesn’t support the bill because “I remain opposed to federal funding for research that involves the destruction of living embryos.”

As he said in his campaign last year, Casey noted he continues to support funding for other types of stem cell research that don’t involve the destruction of embryos, such as umbilical and adult stem cells.

He also said in the campaign that he supported Bush’s ban.

“I have listened carefully, especially to those whose loved ones are suffering from serious diseases and disabilities and who disagree with my position,” Casey said. “I deeply respect their views and hope they can come to understand mine.”

Thank God for this. Of all the uber-liberal nuts that we could have gotten in this Pennsylvania seat, it seems as if we dodged a potential big bullet here. And he's more conservative (on this issue at least) than PA's GOP Senator Arlen Specter, who avidly supports embryonic stem cell research. Nice to see a Democrat with some class. Let's hope it shows in other ways.

For all the folks who say a pro-choice politician has an advantage in Pennsylvania presidential politics ... here is exhibit A why that is dead wrong.

Okay boys and girls, listen up (you too the perpetual whiners) - THIS is why Santorum lost. Not because the ‘po’d at RINOs’ stayed home.

Was Santorum for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research?

Nice to see a Democrat with some class.

I'm glad that Mr. Casey decided on the position he did. However, the word class and Bob Casey should never collide in the same sentence.

It’s not a hard vote for Casey .. especially since the President has already said he would veto it

If the primary thing holding the Republican Party together is abortion, we might as well get ready to lose next year. The Dems will always be able to find some socialist who gives lip service to being pro-life.

Last year, I called Junior Casey a fraud. Now, I now take those words back. Junior Casey is his father’s son.

Pa has too many old folks who are stuck in the 1950s. Too old folks think the Dems are the party of FDR. Outside of Philly, a lot of Dems are pro-life. Heck, even John Murtha is pro-life and pro-NRA.

Funny, I don’t remember Michael J. Fox running any commercials in Pennsylvania attacking Casey for wanting Fox to die by denying him medical treatment......

But it’s good to see Casey on the right side of an issue. Frankly, I forgot he existed.

Soon after he was elected, Casey indicated that he would vote against federal funding of embryonic-stem-cell research. I’m glad to see that he’s keeping his word. All of those pro-abortion Democrats who gave millions of dollars to Casey’s campaign have got to be kicking themselves.

Don’t count on it until the votes are tallied. I won’t believe this one until I see it.

Good for Casey Jr.

Of course, the real test will come if the next Sup Court pick is made by a Republican president, and if that president comes through with a conservative nomination. Schumer allegedly reassured some fellow Dems about Casey Jr by saying he would be good (i.e. bad) on judges, so it will be interesting to see how he acts when the time comes.

Michael J. Fox did something that was really morally wrong. He used his sickness to promote a totally unproven and unethical form of medicine. While I feel for anyone with an affliction such as his, no one should ever manipulate people’s emotions like that to advance a political agenda.

Absolutely. If he joins the filibuster party and chooses to not be another Ben Nelson, then he’s really not much better than Harry Reid.

All the naysayers who said Pennsylvania was stupid owe each an apology. Even though, I voted for Senator Santorum, I knew that Pennsylvania was not as stupid as FREEPERS thought.

until you see the final vote total - you won’t know the truth here. If Casey was the 60th vote on this issue, the Dems would easily flip him. If the Dems otherwise have 60 for this, or fall far short of 60 with or without his vote, they are just softballing this one for him, giving him a free ride.
