FRED'S GREATEST ROLE? an alternative theory of Senator Thompson's not-yet candidacy
- by Mia T, 4.11.07

The absurdity of flipping the premise of reality TV to make a stage-and-screen president America's president appears to be lost on a generation of social conservatives inured to the virtual surreality 1 of clintonian politics and terrified by the prospect a President Giuliani.
To add to the real-virtual complexity, what if Thompson is not planning to jump in at all? What if this is just another role? What if Fred is playing Perot for his friend, John McCain, (who, in this analogy is clinton to Rudy's Bush 41)?
That is, what if Thompson's sole purpose is to give McCain the nomination by skimming off just enough conservatives from Rudy? (NB: gross is net, i.e., McCain has no conservative support to lose.)
The latest Gallup numbers suggest that Thompson's support is coming almost exclusively from Rudy. (See graph.)
-
This theory would explain Fred's unwillingness to declare.
Of course, if the plan doesn't work, then Fred may jump off the stage and into the race for real.

Could be a possibility. McCain just revamped his whole campaign. He’s been talking on the phone with Fred Thompson and Lamar Alexander. Could be Fred might be looking for a VP slot which would be easier than a presidential slot.

I think this just shows the shallowness of Rudy’s support. Many don’t like him on a significant number of issues... but he’s electable! Give them a more conservative—but electable—choice and they jump ship.
Personally, I’m tired of the political game-playing. I’m supporting the most conservative candidate in the race, Duncan Hunter. When the race narrows, I will continue to support the most conservative candidate.

Mias not afraid shes just logical.Hardly. Rudy's accomplishing the impossible - he's making McCain palatable. Fred's help is not needed for that.
Fred entry into the race, however, would obliterate McCain's chances.
Therefore, the theory is absurd. It's pure spin from a Rudy booster trying to blunt Fred's momentum and arrest Rudy's free-fall.

His name will be sh*t on this forum if he decides not to run. Further, it would lend credit to the theory that his potential campaign... was nothing more than a McCain tactic.

Shoot, even if it’s true, McCain’s still better than Rudy (ugh, did I just say that?)

The latest Gallup numbers suggest that Thompson's support is coming almost exclusively from Rudy. (See graph.) The only problem is, the poll says no such thing. He may have siphoned off some Rudy support when he first announced, but where else would it come from? Since then, Thompson is up 2 points anad Rudy is up 7 points. So Thompson's support cannot possibly be coming from Giuliani. Who's down? McCain. There goes your theory.
Thompson is a stalking horse. He announced in order to keep any other conservative from getting traction. He might get in if McCain folds, but not likely
He knows he cannot win, even if the groveling, rabid crusaders here at FR do not.

Do I understand, then, your opinion of Fred Thompson is so low that you believe he’s simply a shill for McCain?

You miss the point.
- The purpose of Fred's fake candidacy is to make McCain viable.
- Fred will NOT enter the race if the plan works and McCain is viable.
- And Fred cannot take any conservative votes from McCain because McCain doesn't have any.

This theory would explain Fred's unwillingness to declare. Fred's a leader, not a follower.
Everybody else declared way too soon.
Fred will declare right on time.

You miss the point. You don't have a point.
The purpose of Fred's fake candidacy is to make McCain viable.
And as I already said, Rudy is doing that all by himself. I never thought I could vote for McCain. But if it comes down to Rudy or McCain, I would pick McCain. Fred not required to make that choice.
And Fred cannot take any conservative votes from McCain because McCain doesn't have any.
And, like I said, conservatives would largely pick McCain over Rudy, given Rudy's ditching of any pretense to be pro-life.
