Elizabeth Edwards says she is scared of the "rabid, rabid Republican" who owns property across the street from her Orange County home and she doesn't want her kids going near the gun-toting neighbor.
Edwards, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, particularly recalls the time neighbor Monty Johnson brought out a gun while chasing workers investigating a right of way off his property. The Edwards family has yet to meet Johnson in person.
"I wouldn't be nice to him anyway," Edwards said in an interview. "I don't want my kids anywhere near some guy who when he doesn't like somebody, the first thing he does is pull a gun out. It scares the business out of me."
But Johnson defended the occasion he brandished a gun, saying those on his land didn't have the proper approval.
"I use the gun for protection, and I considered that an appropriate time," Johnson said. "Sometimes you have to take drastic measures."
Edwards views Johnson as a "rabid, rabid Republican" who refuses to clean up his "slummy" property just to spite her family, whose lavish 28,000-square-foot estate is nearby on 102 wooded acres.
Johnson, 55, acknowledges his Republican roots. But he takes offense to the suggestion

Yeah, the sign’s been up since Christmas. Somebody vandalised it too, a while back.
UPI did a story on this that shows the neighbor, Monty, in a slightly different light. Unfortunately, the Wash Times link isn’t working.
Increasing property taxes leaves less money for home improvements...but don’t tell the Dems that since they prefer the socialism/communism method of ‘taking away your wealth for the common good’ (except their wealth)... the communist elites live like kings while the common people suffer...e.g. Kim Il Jong, Castro, Chavez, Edwards...etc...
If this guy brandishes a deadly weapon on his property without cause, he should obviously be examined before he kills someone including children who may have the misfortune to have stepped on his property - or, more likely, gets himself killed.
But to attempt to morph a looney into a Republican stereotype is low indeed.
>>Let me know when Elizabeth Edwards is afraid of calories.<<
Let’s not sink to that level.
She makes herself out to be a big enough jerk without talking about her weight.
Actually, it helps when all the best looking women are conservative, so we can let our lovely women speak volumes about who holds the market on good looking without having to point it out.
So many people move out to the sticks and build their “I’ve died and gone to heaven McMansions” and they get all bent out of shape over the simple folks lifestyle....country living.
Please accept a word of encouragement and sincere good wishes, offered with many prayers for your healing, restoration and continued life with your family...
Some sensibilities are beyond the divisions of philosophy and politics -- life, health, and family outrank partisan politics... IMHO....

That said...
Your husband's hard-core socialist worldview and wild-eyed over-promised political philosophy are much more scary to me than if ol' UBL moved in next door..
Dammit JOHN, it’s politically stupid to take on a civilian like this. We need you to steal votes from Hillary and you’re not helping yourself here.
Could you post a maps.google.com URL of the Edwards location ?
I am sure all the poor kids in the neighborhood are more than welcome to come over anytime and make use of the Indoor B-ball court and the handball court, and the pool.
Seriously though, Why would anyone want an indoor B-ball court in a home? Its not like a person can play B-ball by themselves. Most of us would settle for a basket to shoot at.
Thanks. The aerial photo looks pretty ordinary for a rural area. Seems a little uppity to criticize the real natives. Maybe they should have checked out the area first instead of being greedy land buyers. And besides that all the trees screen most of everything anyway. I suppose Mrs. Edwards expects the entire blvd. to town to be sanitize of locals and republicans.
“Edwards views Johnson as a “rabid, rabid Republican” who refuses to clean up his “slummy” property just to spite her family, whose lavish 28,000-square-foot estate is nearby on 102 wooded acres.”
Spoken like a true champion of the less fortunate.
Elizabeth Edwards is going to be the death of her husband’s campaign for the presidency, as if Edwards himself wasn’t enough. Unbelievable. These two are the epitomy of arrogance and hypocrisy. Hmmm, very representative of dems in general.

Exactly.
“I have to budget. I have to leave within my means,” Johnson said. “I don’t have millions of dollars to fix the place.”
And unlike the Edwards, he can`t afford to hire servants to do all the work.
Interesting take on this by a British newspaper. Nary a word about her comments about her “slummy” neighbor.
