Veterinary Hospital Chain Reports 39,000 Pets Were Sickened or Killed by Contaminated Food

Pet food contaminated with an industrial chemical may have sickened or killed 39,000 cats and dogs nationwide, based on an extrapolation from data released Monday by one of the nation's largest chains of veterinary hospitals.

Banfield, The Pet Hospital, said an analysis of its database, compiled from records collected by its more than 615 veterinary hospitals, suggests that three out of every 10,000 cats and dogs that ate the pet food contaminated with melamine developed kidney failure. There are an estimated 60 million dogs and 70 million cats in the United States, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The hospital chain saw 1 million dogs and cats during the three months when the more than 100 brands of now-recalled contaminated pet food were sold. It saw 284 extra cases of kidney failure among cats during that period, or a roughly 30 percent increase, when compared with background rates.

"It has meaning, when you see a peak like that. We see so many pets here, and it coincided with the recall period," said veterinarian Hugh Lewis, who oversees the mining of Banfield's database to do clinical studies. The chain continues to share its data with the Food and Drug Administration.

“Move along, nothing to see here?”

It may not be important to you but to the millions of pet owners in America whose pets are like family and the many who have lost a pet;
this is something very important “to see here!”

gezzzzzzzzzzzzz....

I’m so sorry for your loss...I lost two of my best buddies last year.

Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.

And don’t despair my passing,
For I won’t be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I’ll stay.

I’ll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I’ll run,
...a young dog once again.

Here is the article on Diamond, http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2005/NEW01290.html
even though on the 13th of January they deny it, but why is there a class action lawsuit?

"She'd been with me longer than both my marraiges put together, and longer than my son has been alive."

Truly man's best friend.

I'm reminded of an article I read not to long ago about how dogs 'communicate' with us better than our closest genetic relatives (Bonobo's). They are very good at reading our movements, sounds and facial expressions...I see this daily in my dogs.

On a different note, when my son was visiting this past Christmas, we began to look at our old family pictures and he pointed out that in one of the pictures when he was a kid (3) in his pajamas opening Christmas presents on Christmas morning many years ago was a houseplant he recognized. He looked up from the picture and pointed it out still in the living room. We decided that that plant had been with 'us' for at least 35 years, maybe longer. He's 38 now. That plant and a couple others had moved with us/me from California to Florida to Texas to Alabama. It's like an old friend.

Kelly, I think you might want to google ‘Sarcasm impairment’ ;-)

I believe Don was citing the fact certain groups are still holding onto that 12-17 number...

My baby was half cocker and half schnauzer, the vet called him a snhaucker.
Wonderful dog, I held him also on March 23, the vet had to inject him in the iv 3 times and then shave a back leg and inject him again. This was upsetting to the vet but I was relieved it didn't go right to his heart, I had more time to tell him and reassure him was going to be at peace.
Vet said he probably had circulatory problems. I had read one of the symptoms was blood clots, I figured that is why it didn't go to his heart right away.
There is a site that is going to have a national march at the end of the month.
It is Pets Need A Voice Too, www.pnv2.com

It also states that,
SENATE HEARING ON PET FOOD CONTAMINATION TO BE HELD THURSDAY, APRIL 12th, Click HERE to read more.
At least Senator Durbin listened. I tried to get Senator Ensign NV involved but to no avail.
You would think him being a vet, he would give more time to this. He has lost my vote next time.

Seems to me you didn’t read AND understand his post. It’s clear he was concerned about the situation (he’s GLAD he only feeds kibble, etc), and was then putting himself in the place of “the anointed” such as Menu foods who might not want you to know.

I’m still skeptical of all this, too.

Of course, my dog is allergic and only eats food (from Canada, unfortunately) that comes through the vet. I don’t have to deal with gluten because she’d be allergic to it (never mind the meat).

Banfield being associated with PETSTUPID doesn’t bolster my confidence (ever wonder what happened to the dog Banfield held hostage from a woman in CT?). And you’re talking .03% if they’re close to right.

Actually, the biggest thing that bothers me is everyone getting on “the pet-food industry”. It’s not as if they’ve been constantly running into poison problems. How many decades has it all been in existence? This is apparently 1 shot; 1 bad lot of ingredients. It happens everywhere to everything. If they were “evil”, pets dying from this would have been happening for ages all the time. Why just now?

But it’s still interesting to see how this pans out. I believe there may be something wrong, but I don’t believe the old liberal “industry is evil” and they “did it on purpose”.

Holey cranky.

I’m not sure who piddled in your cornflakes TODAY, but somebody needs to chill out.

No-one else missed the sarcasm. As for “P & V” this is the first time I’ve ever seen them post.

What was that tag I saw? Ah yes: SarCHASM: the gulf betwen a somewhat wryly amusing remark, and the understanding of same.

For the record, I am genuinely saddened that there are/were so many pets and families affected by this tainted food. I’m lucky and I thank God that my pets were not involved.

Now kindly remove that chip off your shoulder and try getting past this event. Life ain’t fair, so get used to it. Some of us react to worry in ways that YOU might find different. Tough noogies.

I am so sorry for the young lady. Hopefully this won’t stop her from still feeding the poor babies who get dumped off. All of my animals are ‘strays’ that I adopted. Recently we added another to the fold, someone dumped her in my front yard.

Anyone who ‘dumps’ an animal like so much garbage should be buried in the local landfill.

I’m aware of that info but didn’t have the link. I’m glad you did. People need to know these things especially now with the pet food industry under the spotlight.

No until tomorrow??? Are the puppies moving around? If not this could be very dangerous for your dog and she should be seen today!
