Oh dear... I am so sorry. Sounds like you gave her a wonderful life.

Oh, what a loss. I don’t know what I’ll do when it’s time to lose one of my dogs. What a heart breaker.

Your post got me a little choked up. As sad as losing your Basha must have been, it sounds like she had a beautiful passing. Eighteen years! That's some life -- what breed was she?

What a heart breaker

I've had that dog literally since the day she was concieved. Her dam and sire (whom I also owned) 'did the deed' in my backyard. I was there when the pups were born and was also literally the first person to touch them.

She'd been with me longer than both my marraiges put together, and longer than my son has been alive.

She was there for some really good times as well as some times when I couldn't buy a friend for love nor money.

She was always a good and gentle dog even if she wasn't the brightest of Gods creatures. When she passed she was wearing her favorite 'old lady' sweater and she still had it on when I buried her under her favorite flower patch in my backyard.

The two younger dogs are leaving her 'nap spots' alone for the time being. I think they're convinced I'm going to walk into the house with old Basha on the leash any time now and that she'll be freshly washed and cut once again.

I got some odd looks from the other two dogs as I picked up Bashas food dish and dog bed to put them away for the final time. I know they didn't understand why I was balling my eyes out as I did it.

But as I said, I know she's in a better place free at last of the pain which had been making her miserable for the last several months. When her hips almost completely failed last week I knew it was time, though I most sorely wished it wasn't.

The vet who helped me through it was wonderful. They've been seeing her since the very beginning. When they pulled out her records and saw she'd been a 'client' since 1989 they were amazed. Even the ladies at the counter were dabbing their eyes as Basha slowly limped in to the exam room for the last time.

It's going to be hard to break long developed habits. I caught myself reaching down to pour the third bowl of kibble this morning before I remembered.

I hope that will pass soon because it's a hard knock to the heart.

I'll think of her every time I look at the blooms in the flower patch out back and remember that she was indeed a very good dog.

Thank you my friend.

Almost forty thousand pets ... the mind boggles and the heart aches.

I had to get Miss Ursa tested because, as a treat, I fed her one of those packets of goo food in gravy. As a treat for being a good dog. I'm still kicking myself over this.

Thankfully, Ursa was fine--but I refuse to go back to feeding my beloved pets commercial food. Fertilizer a few years ago with Purina, fungus with Diamond brand, and now this rat poisin wheat gluten. Someone mentioned terrorism -- I wouldn't be surprised if it were some sort of stalking horse for future attempts. It does make you wonder.

You have my apologies. I certainly didn't intend to cause you any pain.

She was a Cocker Spaniel. It's kind of ironic because when I got my first Cocker, who was Bashas dad, the vet warned me 'they don't live very long. 7 or 8 years max.'

Well old Bear lasted 14 years and Basha made it almost to 18.

The blessing of it all is that I got to have to very nice dogs for a very long time. And they're both within eyesight of each other now, one under each flower patch.

If I close my eyes a bit I'm sure I'll be able to see them chasing each other around just one more time snapping at each others ears wearing those goofy Cocker Spaniel smiles.

And I'll be very, very grateful for that.

I buy only established brands that use real meat as the primary ingredient. Costs a little more but its worth it.

Oh, no, that's not what I meant! :-) You just wrote so lovingly about your girl, I was so moved.

I don't think I've ever met a Cocker Spaniel, I've come across a few Britany Spaniels. I love the ears, though, and the goofy smiles.

We had a Golden Retriever who lived to 15 -- he was an awesome goofball. His version of doggy heaven mostly involves him sleeping in a sun patch near my old cat, Frank. Soft gold/brown fur that curled slightly -- he wasn't one of those silky, long haired Goldens-- and these sweet brown eyes. He had a grin that would just make your heart explode with utter joy -- I miss him.

Try Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance.

It's nothing but all natural ingredients. Our Pug, Pugsley, had some real digestive issues until we found out he had a wheat gluten allergy.

Fortunately we discovered that months ago and removed that product from his diet else he may well have been consuming one of these contaminated products.

Since we switched to Mr. Van Pattens products none of our dogs has had any digestive or skin issues to speak of. I can recommend it to you without reservation.

I don't think I've ever met a Cocker Spaniel,

Cockers are great dogs. Not too big, not too small, and they have wonderful dispositions. My old Cocker, Bear, was absolutely the smartest dog I'd ever seen. I tried to duplicate that by breeding him but apparently it skips a generation as Basha had all the sharp corners of a pound of wet liver.

But I loved the both of them dearly as you can tell.

Cockers are bred for birding; upland game like pheasant and quail. They like a lot of exercise. They're also unbelievably loyal and great if you have children.

There are two recognized breeds, the American and the English Cocker. Americans tend to be larger and stronger, albeit from my experience they're also goofier. That's not altogether a bad thing.

If you're in the market for a pure breed, you could do a lot worse than an ASCOB Cocker Spaniel.

I’m so glad Basha got to be with you to the end. I’m sorry for your loss, which I know is numbingly painful. (((hug))) It’s hard to lose a friend like that, even when you know it’s their time. I hope you enjoy your pictures and remember all the excellent times you had over the years. God bless.

Boy, am I glad that my boys and kitty all eat nothing but kibble and whatever human food I eat. Well, the cat does get the occasional can of purina soft, but that is ending at the finish of this case.

Who’da thunk WE would be buying wheat from China? Then again, WHY would there be melamine in the wheat?

So many questions, no answers.

it’s “Vitamin K” but it’s not. Menadione is a precurser to Vitamin K and is banned
