I suspect & expect that by the presidential election cycle next year, Americans will be so fed up with the Bush administration that whoever is running for POTUS will have to address & be adamantly AGAINST ANY kind of amnesty until the borders are secured and illegals are deported! We must stop Bush's comprehensive immigration reform. It's a Trojan Horse..
He wants to reward people who have come into this country ILLEGALLY? It's insane.
We need to increase penalties for both employers and employees who are breaking OUR laws..
And we need a POTUS Candidate who will "swear to defend" our Country against Illegal invaders walking across our Borders..

I was still in high school and didnt know any better. lol. Politics were hardly my priority at that time. There were three things before that and it was girls, girls, girls...ok four...party. I was in the work force and I was NOT happy about Reagan's amnesty at that time, and I am still not happy about it. It did show us that IT DIDN'T WORK to stem the flow. In fact things are worse now.

Not the way I remembered it -- or
Floyd Brown
Indeed, he signed into law a permissive abortion bill early in his California governorship which has resulted in more than one million abortions. He publicly later regretted this decision, and he said it was the biggest mistake he made in government.
Unless, of course, he made more than one "biggest mistake"!

If we can locate and deport illegals today, what makes anyone think we’ll be able to locate and send guest workers home?

I like your solutions. However, I think the absolute first thing that must be done is no more welfare, schooling, tuition, medical care, etc. As one Repub Rep said before the last elections, no one breaks into the amusement park when the rides are turned off.
I agree with your number 7 but I think - from prior experience concening other legislation, particullary abortion - is that a Fed court would strike the legislation down as unConstitutional.
You are correct about law enforcement. It should start at the top with the President. If ICE will not do its job, fire the head of ICE.

Yep. At least people were honest in 1986 and called it Amnesty. Today, the spin is a “back of the line” path to citizenship and paying a fine. The “A” word invokes a violent reaction and claims that this is not Amnesty.

The thing I don’t understand is that people like yourselves (who lived through first time) are not shouting it from the rafters how it was a failed policy and did not work. George Bush jr was not part of politics during that time and in fact was partying pretty much during that time and maybe did not realize what was going on and the effect of the policies. I know that you are shouting from the rafters, but I am talking of the other 20 million or so.

Although legally I don't think the courts have a leg to stand on, I have to agree with you on that. But definitive federal legislation, which is then struck down by the courts, would demonstrate the necessity for a constitutional amendment, which would then be forthcoming, I think.
Either way, congress should force the issue, and make SCOTUS defend this obscenity, for all to see.

“When the meat packing cos were raided a few months ago, legals in droves showed up to fill the jobs that opened up when the illegals were deported.
Statistics show that Americans are doing jobs, because stats show that illegals do some 10-20% of those jobs. Who does the President think is doing the other 80-90% of the jobs?”
Correctomundo!
You realize it and I realize it...but of course Bush refuses to realize it. And Bush's failure to enforce the immigration laws of this country will be the death knell of his presidential legacy.

Exactly. If the pro-amnesty crowd wants to prove their bona fides, lets see their commitment to enforcing our borders first. Trust but verify. I see no sense of urgency in dealing with those already here.Right! We're very smart. I've been saying for some time you can ignore the ones that are already here for the time being because until you stop the border crossings they're just going to turn around and come right back. Once the border is closed we will be in a position to be a great deal more compassionate in how we treat the ones that are already here, though not the violent criminal ones, or the ones that drive drunk, or drive without insurance, or defraud Social Security, or work off the books... Uh, maybe we ARE going to have to deport (or lock up) all 30 million.

I know that you are shouting from the rafters, but I am talking of the other 20 million or so. There are people shouting, but our governments at local, state and federal levels for the most part are deliberately ignoring the wishes of legal citizens. There are a few voices in the wilderness (Hunter, Tancredo etc.) but for the most part, those that are opposed are being ignored by those that could make a difference.
This is the one issue that I think an impeachment could be successful except that the dems don't want to enforce the laws either.

The issue of allowing an invasion of our country borders on treason. Our military defends the borders of other countries but not our own. EPA was ordered to enforce laws. Same should be in cases of illegal aliens who not only get perks, they also get to sue for large sums those who try to stop them.
