The Once and Future Republic of Vermont ( A GREAT IDEA!!)
The Washington Post ^ | April 8, 2007 | Ian Baldwin and Frank Bryan

Posted on 04/08/2007 7:14:36 AM PDT by jmaroneps37

The winds of secession are blowing in the Green Mountain State.

Vermont was once an independent republic, and it can be one again. We think the time to make that happen is now. Over the past 50 years, the U.S. government has grown too big, too corrupt and too aggressive toward the world, toward its own citizens and toward local democratic institutions. It has abandoned the democratic vision of its founders and eroded Americans' fundamental freedoms.

Vermont did not join the Union to become part of an empire.

Some of us therefore seek permission to leave.

A decade before the War of Independence, Vermont became New England's first frontier, settled by pioneers escaping colonial bondage who hewed settlements across a lush region whose spine is the Green Mountains. These independent folk brought with them what Henry David Thoreau called the "true American Congress" -- the New England town meeting, which is still the legislature for nearly all of Vermont's 237 towns. Here every citizen is a legislator who helps fashion the rules that govern the locality.

Today, however, Vermont no longer controls even its own National Guard, a domestic emergency force that is now employed in an imperial war 6,000 miles away. The 9/11 commission report says that "the American homeland is the planet." To defend this "homeland," the United States spends six times as much on its military as China, the next highest-spending nation, funding more than 730 military bases in more than 130 countries, abetted by more than 100 military space satellites and more than 100,000 seaborne battle-ready forces. This is the greatest military colossus ever forged.

Few heed George Washington's Farewell Address, which warned against the danger of a permanent large standing army that "can be regarded as particularly hostile to republican liberty.".....

This should get you off to a great Easter Sunday! Imagine getting rid of two socialist anti American senators and a socialist anti American congressman with a stroke of a pen. Think of what a shiite magnet Vermont would become, cleaning out the bottom feeders from across the eastern United States. It would make how weird dean have to apply for US citizenship. The king POS leahy would have to investigate himself.

Where can we contribute?

No doubt, ALGORE would be their Supreme Leader. BTW did’t the South try to succeed once? And look where that got them.

The difference between Vermont and the Confederacy is that it came about as a buffer state between colonial New York and colonial New England.

Most of the land was carved out of New York claims. In any case, if the people there no longer care to have a Vermont, seems to me the solution is to retrocede the land to New York and New Engalnd (to be divided between New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Modern surveying techniques should prove to be satisfactory for working through the competing claims from the 1600s so that a fair boundary can be established.

The people who live there should prepare for immediate departure to some other country.

That just warms the cackles of my heart.

What? That would cut off Vermont’s Federal Aid. On second thought. I’m sure that the Democrats would find a way for them to get Foreign Aid.

Wouldn’t Vermont just join Canada?

So....Vermont wants us to go back into isolation, as a country. That being impossible, in todays world, we can isolate Vermont. We need to tell the people of Vermont that if this is what you want, that’s fine. But....you will not leave the Republic under any circumstances.....you will just be isolated from all governmental decisions.

I once put in a computer system in a hospital in Methuen, Mass.....on the way to work one day I saw a bumper sticker on a car from Vermont that said “Welcome to Vermont, now leave.” I guess in a closed society the inbreeding gets to be a norm.

People do not realize how serious you are. When now-Senator Bernie Sanders ran for Congress, he ran, not on the Dem ticket, but as a “Socialist”.... and won!

Let’s get rid of the People’s Republic of Vermont.... and take New York and California with it.

“Welcome to Vermont, now leave.”

And I thought Southerners were harsh toward Northerners.
Remind me not make a canoe trip up there.

Well, the South is still succeeding very well thank you. If you are however referring to that little dust up called the War of Northern Aggression then yes the South did secede at one time.

They might as well succeed from the Union. It will give us a great excuse to start the 2nd Civil War to purge the country of Liberal traitors living off the backs of patriots.

Now wait a second. Not too long ago the MSM automatically labelled anyone who made such ludicrous seperatist comments a nut. I guess when it’s demonRATS doing it instead of right wingers then it’s a serious proposition.

This part is true. I'm all for their secession, and then why don't all of us conservatives move to one state, seceed, and have our own free country, run as the founding fathers intended.

Alaska might be a good place; plenty of water, oil, and a great climate to be globally warmed.

You know, Vermont has a great and wonderful tradition as an American State. Just because many of the present residents are liberals doesn’t mean we need to toss out a beautiful corner of our great nation.

Not that log ago Texas was a solid Democrat State, indeed the entire South was. Times change people come and go. You don’t amputate a limb every time you are suffering from an infection.

My ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War was one of the early citizens of Vermont. He and others like him gave their all for the country they loved. Don’t take their memories out with the Monday trash. Vermont is America. The Left would love for all of our great country to break apart into squabbling mediocre little nations. For God’s sake don’t help them.
