Del Monte Pet Products Voluntarily Withdraws Specific Product Codes of Pet Treats and Wet Dog Food Products in the United States

April 6, 2007As a precautionary measure, Del Monte Pet Products is voluntarily recalling select product codes of its pet treat products sold under the Jerky Treats®, Gravy Train® Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels® brands as well as select dog snack and wet dog food products sold under private label brands. A complete list of affected brands and products is below.
The Company took this voluntary recall action immediately after learning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall.
The adulteration occurred in a limited production quantity on select product codes of the brands below. This recall removes all Del Monte pet products with wheat gluten procured from this manufacturing facility from retail shelves. In addition, since the beginning of the recall in mid-March, Del Monte has discontinued sourcing product from this plant.
No other Del Monte Pet Products treats, biscuits or wet dog food products are impacted by this recall, and no Del Monte dry cat food, dry dog food, wet cat food or pouched pet foods are subject to this voluntary recall.
Del Monte Pet Products has proactively engaged and fully cooperated with the FDA since the start of its investigation. The adulterated ingredients were used in limited production over the last three months for those items identified by specific product codes. Del Monte Pet Products has not used wheat gluten from this manufacturing facility in China in any other pet products except those described below.
Consumers should discontinue feeding the products with the Product Codes detailed below to their pets.
Del Monte Pet Products are 100% guaranteed and all voluntarily recalled products will be refunded.
Del Monte Pet Products customers can contact our Consumer Hotline at (800) 949-3799 for further information about the recall and for instructions on obtaining a product refund. Consumers can also click on the "Contact Us" button and submit the Contact Us form, including UPC number, product name, Best By Date, and manufacturing code information (located under the Best By date).

As part of the pet community, we value the health and well-being of pets, and we deeply regret this situation. We will continue to take any and all actions necessary to ensure the quality and safety of our products.
that saturday breakfast sounds good lol.
I for one can’t stand splenda, I can feel the granules or whatever, like it tastes like I’m drinking sandy tea.
Cant recall the name of that rodenticide offhand, but it was something else. Either one is bad news for pets, however!

Says in the article there was a recall, I never heard about it, did anyone else. 19 products recalled.
Could have just been a trial run for whoever did this.
MG,
If you have a ping list can you add me?
Last week my local vet had five dogs in with serious issues regarding this recall, and yesterday they told me there were two more. They are encouraging making homemade food for pets (which I have been doing since the first recall, since my dogs had eaten some of the recalled foods).
And they said they believe this is going to get a lot worse.
I’m not getting pinged on these recall lists, could you add me to yours?
I am not a pinger, lol, but do get pinged by M_guy and harofthedog.
I sent this note to them also to get you on their list.
That was my thought. Why are we importing this crap when we pay our farmers to NOT grow more wheat?
I’m so very sorry about your son’s dog.
Thank you Faith65.
If you are craving a sweet desert, take a box of sugar-free jello & whip it for 3 minutes with a pint of heavy whipping cream. It makes a thick fruity mousse. Net Carbs? 0 Add 1/4 cup raspberries for a negiligible .5 carbs.
Thanks HOTD for pinging me. Just finished cooking chicken and rice with steamed carrots for my babies, including the old yellow lab we talked about so much a year ago (he finally became an inside pet fulltime, and it’s going well now).
I made lamb stew for me and hubby yesterday and cooked the lamb trimmings and bones and boiled them for them. They are getting SPOILED, love this recall.
True, but Pounce cat treats are; ergo,I pinged.
Better learn to like it. Most cats eventually come down with renal failure, if something else doesn't kill them first, so if Tabby recovers from this and lives a good long life, you're likely to be doing this again down the road. Daily subQ fluids can extend their lives for years. I have a 21 year old whose been getting fluids every night for almost 2 years now. He lies on my bed and gets combed while they drip in, and he just loves the whole thing. Doesn't really seem to notice the fluids and barely notices getting poked, but lying on mommy's bed getting combed is clearly a great treat in his mind. It's become a nice bedtime routine for me too.
BTW, if you need to continue this for a while, you'll probably save a bundle by buying fluids/needles/lines from someplace other than your vet (unless your vet is selling these items for way less than most vets). Some people are able to get them locally through a Costco or Walgreen's. Best online source I know of is http://www.bricomedicalsupplies.com Depending on where you live (due to shipping costs), buying lactated ringers by the 12-bag case will run between $3.13 and $4.08 per bag, shipping including (and no extra shipping charge for needles and lines purchased at the same time as fluids). Also, I highly recommend Terumo ultra thin-wall (UTW) needles -- for a given gauge, the hole in the middle is bigger, so you can use a smaller gauge and make a smaller hole in kitty, which is generally more comfortable for the cat, ans also results in less trouble with leakage after the needle comes out. Many cat renal failure veterans refer to the needles most vets provide as "kitty harpoons". I use the tiny 22 gauge, 3/4" Terumos, and 200mL takes about 10 minutes to drip in.
I eat Special K...wheat gluten is the second ingredient.
This is so frustrating. Who runs the FDA? The career bureaucrats who weren’t good enough to work for FEMA?
We have an entire country whose beloved pets are in danger, and our USELESS GOVERNMENT (you know, the one our tax dollars feed) has been criminally incompetent or unwilling to do something about it (and, by the way... WHAT ABOUT ***OUR*** FOOD, FELLAS?)
>:-(
Please stop with the paranoid conspiracy theory stuff. It's not helping. There were two virtually identical releases for the US and Canada:
US: http://www.menufoods.com/recall/Press%20Release%2004052007%20US.htm
Canada: http://www.menufoods.com/recall/PRESS%20RELEASE%2004052007%20CAN.htm
There is one little extra sentence in the Canadian version, which has no bearing on the situation in the US: "A further seven varieties for Europe have been added to the recall list." The header information for the Canadian version also contains the Canadian stock exchange trading symbol for a related security "Menu Foods Income Fund (TSX:MEW.UN)"; this security does not trade on any US exchange. The byline for the US version shows the name of the US PR service that distributed that release, PRNewswire. The byline for the Canadian version shows the name of the Canadian PR service that distributed that release, CCNMatthews. The two releases are otherwise absolutely identical, including every detail of the recalled brands/flavors/dates.
Companies with international operations normally have ongoing contracts with different PR distribution services in different countries. These contracts remain in force during a business crisis situation, and there is nothing sinister about that. Different countries have different laws that may apply to the content of press releases (i.e. libel laws, securities laws, etc.), so it's just prudent business practice to have releases handled by a PR firm that's based in the country where each release is made.
