We have shown many solar phone chargers, but the sun isn't always shining when you need to make a call. We have seen crank-up chargers as well, but we like this combination flashlight and crankup charger for cell phones for a lot of reasons: 1) it is good emergency backup (designed in Japan for earthquakes and other disasters) 2) it has built in red and white LEDs for additional emergency use, which can be set to white to act as a flashlight or flashing red as an emergency beacon; 3) with cellphone bills as high as they are, one should have to work a bit to make a call. 4) Imagine how many fewer people would be driving with cell phones to their ears if they had to stop and crank it up every eight minutes. (although many would figure out a way to drive, crank and talk at the same time) 5) only 2,000 yen or 20 bucks. ::Nodaya via ::Trendhunter

If I’m smart enough to pack this, I’m smart enough to pack a backup set of batteries.

C. Crane has been offering a model for years. And I think the Eton/Grundig FR300 crank radio can charge cell phones too.
(although, I don't think you can charge your cell phone to make crank calls into the past)

I’ve got one of those that is also a light,am/fm radio and siren.
To get a couple of minutes talk time requires Popeye forearms, which I now have.

The main problem with cell phones is that the most of the manufacturers avoid using a standard mini-USB connector so they can charge exorbitant prices for replacement cables.

I have one of those crank-opperated radios too. When listening to a ball game, I find that I can get about 1 1/2 innings for 30 seconds of cranking — yet another obscure figure for a game that thrives on statistics.

There's a nice new wooden version coming out too! LOL we had one of those hanging on our wall (The day operator's name was Glessie) and the mine had magneto phones until 1972. It went along with 25 cycle electricity, Screened sleeping porches, no TV until 1959, and outhouses.

I've had a hand cranked cell phone charger for about 3 years now, and I carry it in my car. They are good for any kind of emergency when your cell phone has run down and there is no power source to charge it up again. I've given them to all of my family and friends. :o)
IF only those who have been lost on Mt Hood would have had them, they could have been rescued. They're good for when people are out hiking or camping and a member of their party gets lost. They could save a lot of lives!
