Cat saves family from poisonous fumes

NEW CASTLE, Ind. - A cat helped spare a family from death by carbon monoxide poisoning by jumping on the bed and meowing wildly as fumes filled the home, the owners said. Eric and Cathy Keesling said their 14-year-old cat, Winnie, played a crucial role in saving their lives March 24 after a gasoline-powered water pump in their basement caused the odorless but deadly gas to build up. About 1 a.m., the domestic shorthair began nudging Cathy’s ear and meowing loudly. “It was a crazy meow, almost like she was screaming,” said Cathy, who hesitated to get up until Winnie’s caterwauling and jumping persisted. When she finally climbed from bed, she realized she was nauseous and dizzy and couldn’t awaken her husband. Because he had undergone minor neck surgery the previous day, she decided to call 911 but was so disoriented she had trouble dialing. Paramedics found the couple’s 14-year-old son, Michael, unconscious on the floor near his bedroom. The Keeslings were taken from the home in oxygen masks, treated for carbon monoxide poisoning and soon recovered. Cathy Keesling said Winnie acted similarly last summer when tornadoes tore through the area, 45 miles east of Indianapolis. “I really believe cats can sense these kind of things,” she said.

My cats aren’t Siamese and they do that. When I’m crying, they curl up on me to make me feel better...

How do you think they remove hair balls from each other?

Whatever you do, remember safety first. A broken neck wouldn’t be so great for Easter (or any other time!).

These people need to hold on to this cat, who seems to save them time and again.

I am sorry you feel that way. Have you ever read the book Puss in Boots? Cats are among the most courageous of animals, and more intelligent and sophisticated than dogs are.

Apparently it can - there was that recent story about another kitty who did. When the time comes for that, I’m confident that this kitty will be ready for that task, too.

Feed that kitty steak and meaty baby food!

Cats are always looking out for number one.

I've had dogs and cats for many years. My preference is dogs, but cats are special in their own way. You just have to understand they're wired differently. Yeah, no doubt the meal ticket thing is much more apparent when it comes to a relationship with a cat ... but they can be charming and entertaining.

Definitely throw it some food. Can the fire dept help? Poor precious kitty, it shouldn’t be up there.

Yay! Let’s hear it for Siamese cats!

Over the years I’ve owned a bunch and without a doubt, each one of them has managed to alert me to something or other. Even if it was to “tell me” a phone was ringing while I was running a vaccuum cleaner. Don’t believe me? Try owning one. If treated properly, they are fabulous animals. They are extremely intelligent, interactive, loving and of course, verbal.

We currently own three males who are a riot together. They’ve got the whole macho thing going on. I suspect it goes something like: “I’m the boss.” “No, I’M the boss.” “Wanna bet, fatso!” Etc. etc.

Yay! Let’s hear it for Siamese cats!

This past week I received an e-mail from friends of mine who just lost one of their Siamese cats unexpectedly. They've had Siamese cats for a number of years, this one only six, was a favorite as he was a real character. It's always a sad day when you lose a pet.

Thank you. Thank you. It’s so nice to read pro-Siamese comments for a change.

I’ve never understood the negativity towards the breed. I know that Disney’s “Lady and the Tramp” is largely to blame for that, but the way Siamese were portrayed in that film is completely untrue.

The Siamese we owned when my daughter was born were beyond sweet to her. They slept on the floor in front of her crib for months, even though their regular bed would have been far more comfortable. We immediately saw that they were protecting “their baby.” It was a precious thing to see.

Must dash. Taylor and Rhys are currently playing tag. Excuse me, running maneuvers. The Army turned them down when they volunteered for Iraq but they like to stay in shape just in case. Viking Kitties, don’tcha know.

My cat did my wife and me the same favor. We had just moved into a new house and the furnace was supposed to have be cleaned per the P&S. Well it wasn't and the stray cat who I brought home shortly after I purchased the house woke us up early one Saturday as the fumes were starting to leak under the basement door (which was right beside the bedroom). Without him we would have just snoozed on into the afterlife. That was before we started a family, etc. The whole bunch of us are here because of that cat.

I'm going to give him some chicken when I get home.

Correction in title: Feline Overlord Saves Human Servants From Fumes.

Since "Winnie" is a she, shouldn't that be "OverLady"? or would it be "Queen"?

I prefer "Queen Winnie" myself.

I’m very sorry to hear of your friend’s loss. It’s always painful to loose a beloved pet. Kitty prayers for all.
