As officials announced an expanded pet food recall today, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said that the Senate will hold an oversight hearing on the investigation and regulatory mechanisms that govern the pet food industry. During a press conference today in Wicker Park, Durbin (D-Ill.) said the role of the Food and Drug Administration needs to be expanded to prevent future threats to humans and animals, and to penalize companies that delay reporting health issues.

My predictions:

The FDA will get all the blame.

Congress won't accept any for abrogating its oversight responsibilities.

And the PRC will be let off the hook.

Is Dickie Durban talking about the same FDA that is responsible for the safety of Our food supply. The same food that sickens thousands and kills dozens of people every year. I think the pet food industry has a done a remarkable job until this latest incident. How could this been prevented when scientist can't agree on what was in the pet food.

According to the FDA vet on CNN this morning, all the wheat gluten coming in from China is now being tested. FWIW, I thought shipments had been banned, but apparently not.

But if we're testing now, why weren't we earlier? This ain't the first problem the Chinese have had with their wheat.

Are we not at war?

On two fronts?

Nice to see that Mr. Durbin has found something to to with his copious amounts of free time...

The net result of his hearings will be higher prices for pet foods. Count on it.

since ChemNutra Inc. is located in Las Vegas, I would like to know what crooks are on the Board of Directors. I would also like to know who is the president of this company and who are his pals.

Good going, Dickie: you haven't even held useless grandstanding hearings yet, and the solution is already more goobermint jobs. Surprise, surprise.

“You don’t think Dirty Harry (Reid)is one of their pals, do you?”

Excellent point, sweetiepiezer. Those were also my thoughts but didn’t want to say them out loud.

I found that Stephen Miller is the CEO for ChemNutra Inc. But I don’t know anything about him…connections, etc.

To continue:

“ChemNutra imports over 4,000 tons per year, and our customers include several Fortune 500 companies.”

I would also like to know who are the “several Fortune 500 companies” buying their products and the name of the products being bought.

OK,
Found this out, let us see who his is on his board of directors and who his friends are in the Senate or elsewhere.
Could it be Harry Reid, or one of our Senators, Senator Ensign is a Veternarian also.
I called Ensign’s office the other day and asked why he had not done something and Durbin did.
Being a vet you would think he would demand something.

BIG CYA somewhere here.

“The FDA wouldn’t reveal the name of the US Distributor of this tainted wheat, ChemNutra. (Did the AP reporter find it himself or was it handed to him by the Dept. of Homeland Security people along with the instructions to emphasize “it’s not in the human food supply!” They got their AP screaming headline, so that worked.

Then Stephen S. Miller, the CEO of ChemNutra who was the US Distributor, would NOT reveal the names of the people he sold it to.

Why? Was he told NOT to by the DHS? Possibly because Del Monte would be on the list. And even if it is the Del Monte PET Food division maybe they are afraid that people will see it and think ,”It’s in my ketchup!”. So does that justify them holding back this info?

And why does the AP just accept that? Shouldn’t for the health and safety of all the pets be a demand that Stephen S. Miller produce his list?

Of course we have no proof that Stephen S. Miller of ChemNutra only sold it to pet food companies and that the distributor he sold it didn’t sell it to anyone in the human food supply chain. We just have to take his word. It’s a secret. We can all wait a few more days. And then when we find out, be sure to ask the question. What was the hold up? Who held up this info? Why?

FYI Spocko Aside: Did you know that ConAgra cut a deal with the USDA so that they didn’t have to notify the public about the locations of where tainted beef was shipped? Yep, and during our first mad cow scare that meant that a Vietnamese restaurant in Truckee, CA served people mad cow steak. Why? Because the information about where the food was shipped was dubbed proprietary in the “rules” negotiated with the USDA and big Ag. Is something similar going on now?

I point this out with much trepidation. Remember the Beef Industry went after Oprah for criticizing hamburgers. I’m just a brain in a box so maybe they won’t notice me.”

I am going to say it out LOUD, my pet is dead and I might even go over to the company and ask questions, not far from my house

I cannot believe it either, the company is on DURANGO road, unreal. Read my tagline and you will see why.

You are not going to believe this. We, at the same time, came across that same information. I debated whether to put it up; but while I was sitting on it, you took care of the decision making and did it. Thank you.

No, I did not know that ConAgra cut a deal with the USDA. I missed that along the way. Not surprising but the reality is still mentally devastating. Thank you for that piece of information. I had no idea. Incredible!

Lou Dobbs on Monday did state that the wheat gluten from China has found its way into the human food chain in breads to include bagels. He also stated that the FDA only checks 1% of our food supply. Why does the FDA exist? These clowns are costing us lives and money. All they do is push paper around. 1% might as well be 0%.

“Is something similar going on now?” I have no doubts in my mind.

“I’m just a brain in a box, so maybe they won’t notice me.”

Don’t worry. Some folks have to stand up and be heard while many cower. (A few freepers not included.)

The names of the board of directors continue to be quite elusive.

I had better hopes for John Ensign. His silence screams volumes.

Thank you for your courage.

Oh, sweetiepiezer, it breaks my heart. I am so sorry. I lost a wonderful white kitty cat a few months ago, and the deep hurt is still there. For a few weeks after losing her, I sometimes thought I would see her in/on her favorite spots in the house. Once I would zero in, I would realize that it was something else that was white like a towel or something else.

You need to confront those people. Carry a small recorder on your person.
