Almost two-thirds of California residents believe President George W. Bush is untruthful and only 23 percent approve of his job performance, according to a new poll released today from San Jose State University.
In contrast to the president, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's approval rating is at a near-record high of 62 percent, according to the poll, conducted by the Survey and Policy Research Institute at SJSU.
Schwarzenegger is winning approval from liberal and moderate Californians while still maintaining a 64 percent approval rating among conservatives, according to the survey results.
While California's presidential primary is 10 months away, the poll results could be good news for moderate Republican candidates for president, such as former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
"Our results suggest that among Republicans the Republicans that are most similar to Arnold are going to do the best,'' Jackson said.

That thought alone should give everyone a good shiver or two.. To see all the games that some continue to play here while Rome America burns should make it a double shiver. how quickly visions fade these days
How many times are people like you going this stupid point? The President has the most power on the issue as the President nominates Supreme Court justices. Overturning Roe is the only way for progress to made on the issue.
BTW, the majority of the American public favor banning abortion except in the cases of rape, incest and the mother's life being endangered so overturning Roe would make a difference.
Meanwhile, what in the world does abortion have to do with "conservatives" approving a RINO that is a radical environmentalist and trying to implement socialized health care in California. Are you proud "conservatives" and Republicans are too stupid or left-wing in that state to support a liberal Republican?
Why not just admit you're a liberal RINO creep trying to move the GOP to the left? You're not going to be satisified until Republicans and "conservatives" outside of California are become as liberal as Schwartzenkennedy and those "conservatives" and Republicans in California are?
You're a moron. The Democrats gained back the majority in Congress by running MORE CONSERVATIVE candidates and the Republicans lost because they became big-government liberals in Congress.
The principles of Reagan are the ONLY thing that will get the Republicans back in the majority in this nation.
And, if you don't like those principles, BECOME A DEMOCRAT.
“BTW, the majority of the American public favor banning abortion except in the cases of rape, incest and the mother’s life being endangered”
Can you give a source for that? I was just wondering about this very thing. The polls I could find showed a majority contending abortion should be legal in all cases + most cases, versus those saying it should be illegal in most cases + all cases.
It does matter who the President is. After all he appoints judges to the SCOTUS who interpret the Constitution and arrive at judicial decisions. Where does it say in the Constitution that abortion is or is not a inherent right of all citizens. It doesn't say either way. It does say that the President is charged with protecting citizens from external threats.
The President has the power by executive order to promote life, for example by banning overseas abortion on military bases. Through the State Department he has the ability to promote life thru various international organizations like the U. N. He can thru his good offices promote pro-life policies in the Congress, e. g., the Hyde Amendment.
You say the abortion issue is not going to change no matter who the President is. I respectfully disagree. Reagan and Bush I & II promoted pro-life causes, Clinton did not and in fact overturned all of the executive orders concerning abortion that were in place when Bush I left office. Choices do matter. I prefer a pro-life candidate over another because I believe in the right choice, and that happens to be life.
We all happen to live in the same decade as each other and I am well aware of those "parameters" you seem to suggest. Those parameters are simply a reflection of the fact that the country has become more liberal over time, and especially in the last 45-50 years. It is continuing to become more liberal as the years pass by, much like "Old Europe" is today. That is extremely unfortunate, and many conservatives like myself would like to see that trend reversed, and not just on the issue of human life.
And BTW, I live in California.
Ok, if it isn't going to change either way, why are you so eager to see a pro-abortion monopoly in both parties?
Some things can change such as federal funding of abortions overseas and federal funding for embryonic stem cell policy.
Just what conservative principles to you believe in?
Although Arnold campaigned for parental notification (although some here disagree) and now they want to move the marker even further left with a Rudy candidacy.
However, with Roe gone, states could make progress towards curbing abortion. Not all would eliminate first term abortion but we might finally rid ourselves of the barbaric infanticide of partial-birth abortion. That would itself be a triumph for civilization.
There is a whole mess of fruits which have grown from the poisonous tree that is Roe vs Wade.
If pro-abortionists are so certain the states would keep abortion-on-demand legal, why not just offer an abortion-amendment and be done with it.

In a poll released Friday by Zogby International, a respected polling firm, a total of 56 percent agreed with one of the following pro-life views: abortion should never be legal (18 percent), legal only when the life of the mother is in danger (15 percent) or legal only when the life of the mother is in danger or in cases of rape or incest (23 percent).
Since abortions in cases of rape or incest or those necessary to save the life of the mother are extremely rare, that means a majority of Americans oppose approximately 96 percent of all abortions.
