On Aug. 30, insurgents in two garbage trucks began firing grenades at an outpost near Fullujah.
A Minnesota man was able to hold them off long enough for support from Staff Sgt. David Hammac and several others.
Together, the soldiers defended the camp's water supply.
Hammac's wife said David often down plays his service in Iraq.
"It impresses me so much how he is with his guys, such a great leader and he's says well somebody's gotta do it," Shannon Hammac said.
Hammac and four members of his squad earned Bronze Star Medals with Valor, the nations fourth highest award for bravery.
The other recipients were Sgt. David Olson and Spcs. Jasen Klimek, Charles Knetter and John Olson.
Two soldiers were injured during battle and 20 insurgents lost their lives.

Amazing for guard troops.
I can’t get over that; we have guard troops in a war zone. Amazing.
And they have been doing an amazing job.
We’ve always had Reserves and Guard in war zones.
Yeah, but I’m used to seeing them helping during floods or after tornadoes.
It’s weird to think of them walking in Arabia. Pretty impressive.
They’re trained to the same standards as the Regular Army. They are a component of the Regular Army.
They may be part-time soldiers, but they’re full-time brave.
What’s so amazing? My son, Colorado National Guard, just came home Monday night from over there after a year.
You don’t know your history.
We have guard troops in all our prolonged wars.
