Cheney accuses Pelosi of "bad behavior" in Syria Thu Apr 5, 2007 6:15PM EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney accused U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday of "bad behavior" on her Middle East trip, saying she bungled a message for Syria's president that was later clarified by Israel.
Cheney harshly criticized Pelosi's visit to Syria this week and declared in an interview, "The president is the one who conducts foreign policy, not the speaker of the House."
Pelosi's Syrian stopover was opposed from the start by the Bush administration, which accuses Damascus of sponsoring terrorism and says it should be isolated from the international community.
While in Damascus on Wednesday, Pelosi announced she had told Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that Israel was prepared to negotiate with Syria. That prompted Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office to underline the Jewish state's preconditions for such talks -- including that Syria abandon its "support for terrorist groups."
Cheney, pointing to the Israeli reaction, said it was obvious Olmert had not authorized the message Pelosi delivered.
"It was a non-statement, nonsensical statement and didn't make any sense at all that she would suggest that those talks could go forward as long as the Syrians conducted themselves as a prime state sponsor of terror," the vice president said on the Rush Limbaugh radio show.
"I think it is, in fact bad behavior on her part. I wish she hadn't done it," Cheney said. "Fortunately I think the various parties involved recognize she doesn't speak for the Untied States in those circumstances, she doesn't represent the administration."

No one will listen. The MSM and left hates GWB so much that they are more than happy to trample on the constitution. They will giggle and say, “Mr. Bush needs the help” or some such silly thing. Ignoring the precedent, and the implication for the future.
We are spoiled and self absorbed. We have people in the country who think that there is never a reason for war, ever. That we should never, ever fight, no matter what. The Middle East is filled with people who crave war. They want war in any way they can bring it, and love death. This silliness will continue until the M.E. rises in power enough to pose a mortal threat to us.
It’s sad, but a blind man can see it coming, and there is no avoiding it.

I happen to agree with the VP in this case; the Speaker of the House is not the Secretary of State, and has no business conducting “diplomatic activities”. BUT... if I had an accidental shooting on my resume (one for which the VICTIM apologized for, no less!), I’d would think I’d be bit reticent about appointing myself the judge of what is “bad behavior”.
Let’s at least be fair...
Heck, former US ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie almost singlehandedly gave Saddam Hussein a green light to invade Kuwait by a poorly worded sentence.

Since Cheney is the national father-figure I think it is his patriotic duty to take ‘lil Nancy out to the national woodshed, display some of his fatherly gravitas, and apply the national switch to her seat of iniquity.
She has been savaged all over TV all day long.

Yea, but I thought the American people DEMANDED in the last election that Pelosi be in charge of the dismantling of the free United States as we know it. How dare Cheney speak out against her efforts to negotiate our surrender????
Passports are the property of the US Government. They do NOT belong to the person they are issued to. It says so right on the document itself.
Start with Pelosi’s, then grab Jimmah’s and every other idiot who thinks that he/she has a right to stick his/her oar into foreign policy.
This is MUCH more serious than it seems on the surface. What we are witnessing is an actual breakdown in constitutional authority. Whether these idiots realize it or not, they are pissing in their own soup.
We can’t stop them from acting like idiots, but we can darn sure keep them penned up inside the borders so they don’t interfere with serious people who are trying to get work done.

Congressional group serves U.S. by engaging Syria in long-needed discussions

The Bush administration fears that a congressional delegation’s visit this week to Damascus sends mixed messages to Syria. That’s true in the most fundamental sense. The group, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has opened a dialogue with Syria, something the administration refuses to do.
The delegation, which includes Republican Rep. David L. Hobson of Springfield, is doing what President Bush’s foreign-policy team should have done months ago.
The U.S. withdrew its ambassador from Damascus in 2005 after the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Many Lebanese blamed Syria for the murder. The hard-line approach was intended to pressure Syria to end its support of radical Islamists and its meddling in Lebanon. So far, that hasn’t worked.
U.S.-Syrian differences should not preclude opening a channel of communication. The U.S. repeatedly engaged the Soviet Union in negotiations on nuclear disarmament and other matters, even as Kremlin leaders vowed to destroy America.
Pelosi’s trip with six other lawmakers included stops in the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Israel. The group is performing a type of shuttle diplomacy by relaying Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s message that Israel is ready to talk if Syria halts its support for Palestinian militants.
America used to have substantial influence in forging compromises by the Israelis and Palestinians, but Bush’s game plan has kept the U.S. mostly on the sidelines as the peace effort deteriorated.
Talking to Syria, Iran and other nations in that powder keg of a region was one of the recommendations of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, formed last year by Congress to draw up pragmatic solutions to the Iraq war.
The panel favored regional talks aimed at curtailing a wider war between Shiite and Sunni followers. Although Bush initially opposed this idea, the U.S. joined regional talks in Baghdad in February that included Iran and Syria.
Hobson, the sole Republican in Pelosi’s delegation, is upset that the Bush administration is criticizing the trip. Three Republican House members earlier held talks with Syrians, on Sunday, separate from the Pelosi-led group.
White House officials question almost any congressional effort that doesn’t follow the Bush script. Congress has the right to diverge from the path of the executive branch. That’s what the separation of powers is all about.
