Of over 25 radio programs that Congressman Tancredo was on yesterday, it was The Hugh Hewitt Show that had the chance to illuminate an issue that millions of Americans support us on, but instead he chose to educate Tancredo about the merits of supporting an illegal alien amnesty bill.
After talking with Tancredo he told me his response to Hewitt's show: "Why would we come back on his show? I know it makes good radio to be engaged in an hour for a yelling match with him, but it is not a good use of our time. We will not come back on the program."
When I heard how angry the Tancredo supporters were on Hugh Hewitt's radio show this evening, I went to his blog to read the transcript of yesterday's interview. It was a slap in the face to conservatives everywhere. First, he suggested that a Presidential candidate who didn't resign from Congress while campaigning wasn't really serious about winning. Next, he harrassed Congressman Tancredo for supporting Jim Gilchrist in his Congressional candidacy. In the process, he tried (but failed) to smear the Minuteman Project. And finally, he came to the astonishing conclusion that opposing amnesty guarantees its implementation. Apparently, Mr. Hewitt believes that it's perfectly all right to compromise your values and your beliefs as long as you end up getting what you want. Spoken like a true show business celebrity, Hugh.
Today's show was one of the most interesting I've heard in a long time. Caller after caller, the Tancredo supporters showed themselves to be extremely intelligent, articulate, up to date on the issues, and the angriest callers to the Hugh Hewitt show that I've ever heard. In the end, he lost every argument, sounding more like a petulant child than an intelligent political commentator. Finally, tired of fighting a losing battle, he announced that he would take no more calls on the subject of immigration. The callers won, and Hewitt cut to a commercial.
I'm glad to see that there's a Presidential candidate who is willing to stand strong and commit to honesty and integrity in government. I didn't know much about Congressman Tancredo until now, but after reading the interview transcript, I'm very encouraged. Sir, I wish you well.

This guy sure isn't impressing me with his leadership. He can't stand up to Hugh Hewitt, how's he going to stand up to Speaker Pelosi, Al Qaeda, etc.?

Check all the angry comments on Hugh’s blog entry today. People are getting fed up with him. And I agree with one poster - he used to be reasonable, but these days he can be mean and nasty.

Tancredo is smart enough not to get into a pissing match with Hewitt, only to have his comments amplified & taken out of context by the MSM.
I don’t care about Tancredo, but I’m liking Hewitt a lot less as time goes by, today Hewitt sounded, vain, pompous and sleazy.
He was dumping on a large portion of his audience today, not simply disagreeing with them, but treating them as losers and outsiders.
I think I may just give up on him, college professor, and 10 or 12 years at PBS, and it shows.
The last few days while this was going on, I was so disappointed with what I heard from Hugh Hewitt. I agree with him on a lot of what he says, but on the border and on illegal immigration, he is just wrong. He’s great on the war, on taxes, on religion, etc., but his take on the 2006 election vis a vis illegal immigration couldn’t have been more off the mark.
He suggested that the border wasn’t the big issue and that taking a strong stance on it was a loser for Republicans. From everyone I have talked to that didn’t bother to go out and vote that day, the border and illegals WERE some of the biggest reasons why they stayed home. They were fed up with no one listening, with the pandering, that the feeling was, “Why should I even bother? They are going to ram an amnesty down our throats. They are going to do a guest worker program and they don’t care about what I think.”
HH is out of touch with regular Americans who feel very strongly on this issue, who are affected in a very direct way in their daily lives (jobs, schools, etc). The only people who don’t feel like Tom Tancredo on this issue are WSJ Republicans or liberals.

Tom was on KSFO this morning with Uncle Ree Rodgers and Melanie Morgan Hill, if nothing else, he can add to the debates to come, but expect some to do all they can to jab away to detract him from his path.
Hugh Hewitt is a genuine conservative, and does much to promote conservative candidates and causes.
I agree with Hugh that Tancredo is a single issue sideshow barker, and given the current electoral climate, would only succeed in electing Hillary Rodham.
The border is a big issue; but a more important issue is the Supreme Court; and, as president a Marxist Hillary would have her way with the upcoming SCOTUS appointments. Our very Constitution would be homogenized.
So, for want of strict border policies, some here would wager every conservative ideal and traditional value (including strict border policies) in a fool's bet.
Hewitt a fake? Nope. He just has the ability to see the big picture. Hopefully, the fine Tancredo fans here will see the dire risks of chaining themselves to a single issue strategy by November, 2008.

hardly.. illegal immigration is tied into any number of issues this nation faces today and will well into the future in case you haven’t noticed. from healthcare to education, border security to social security. yeah immigration is a single issue issue.. right.
Don’t forget the WOT. You cannot have a secure country with open borders.

He was excellent this morning on KSFO. I have always liked him, but was even more impressed after today.

All I want is issues that others dance around or fluff over with their answers to get aired.
