Giuliani stands by support of publicly-funded abortions
CNN ^ | April 4th, 2007

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.

"Ultimately, it's a constitutional right, and therefore if it's a constitutional right, ultimately, even if you do it on a state by state basis, you have to make sure people are protected," Giuliani said in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash in Florida's capital city.

A video clip of the then-mayoral candidate issuing a similar declaration in 1989 in a speech to the "Women's Coalition" appeared recently on the Internet.

"There must be public funding for abortions for poor women," Giuliani says in the speech that is posted on the video sharing site YouTube. "We cannot deny any woman the right to make her own decisions about abortion."

When asked directly Wednesday if he still supported the use of public funding for abortions, Giuliani said "Yes."

"If it would deprive someone of a constitutional right," he explained, "If that's the status of the law, yes."

I've read the article, and I've read the Hyde Amendment.

Can you provide a specific quote from Rudy Giuliani in any of his interviews over the last 15-20 years in which has expressed support for the Hyde Amendment?

And let's cut this crap will you?

What "crap" are you talking about?

Thank you.

And the country is plenty safe with women like you, too -- even if I don't always like the candidates you support. LOL.

I'm embarrassed sitting here reading Giuliani supporters posts attempting to defend the indefensible. In one sitting he defended taxpayer funding of abortion, gave a de facto endorsement of Roe, blatantly lied about his past views on abortion, and tried to spin his way out of it.

Where in that statement was any reference to the Hyde amendment or to rape, incest or life of the mother? The only criteria expressed is "poor women".

"A strict constructionist judge can come to either conclusion about Roe against Wade," he said. "They can look at it and say, 'Wrongly decided thirty years ago, whatever it is, we'll over turn it.' [Or] they can look at it and say, 'It has been the law for this period of time, therefore we are going to respect the precedent.' Conservatives can come to that conclusion as well. I would leave it up to them. I would not have a litmus test on that."

Not that I ever believed he had any understanding of what a strict constructionist is, I did think he was smart enough not to put the lie to his recent spin job with a moronic statement like that.

"I'm in the same position now that I was 12 years ago when I ran for mayor -- which is, personally opposed to abortion, don't like it, hate it, would advise that woman to have an adoption rather than abortion, hope to find the money for it," he said. "But it is your choice, an individual right. You get to make that choice, and I don't think society should be putting you in jail."

This is the one I really love from good old straight talkin Rudy. Was he hatin on abortion while delivering the opening address at the Champions of Choice Luncheon? While he was accepting campaign donations from NARAL? Or when he was stating that he would pay for his daughters abortion? Or maybe while he was opposing the ban on partial birth abortion? He is a liar and a BS artist and he should be drummed out of the race for thinking anyone is stupid enough to believe this crap.

And the Giuliani campaign noted later in the day that the former mayor would not seek to make any changes to current law, which restricts federal funding to cases of rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Operative words being "later in the day" right after the "oh sh**" moment when they realized what he said. What if Congress changes the law? Is Rudy going to veto it? Hardly.

There is no longer any rational basis for believing Giuliani will nominate judges that uphold the constitution or do anything other then promote and expand government support of abortion. He is irretrievably around the bend on this issue.

I can’t afford that AR-15 I’ve always had my eye on. How about a handout Rudy? It’s my right.

Today in Wisconsin on of the Dem legislators proposed a $1,000 state tax credit for people who buy hybrids, because if your "belief system" included caring about the Earth but you were short on funds, this tax credit might help you fund this expression of "your beliefs." Yep, those are his words.

My first thought was, "Well then, let's give all the Muslim's a tax credit so they can go on the Haj to Mecca. And the Jews can get a Hannukah and Passover credit, and I can get a credit to use for Christmas presents...

The SCOTUS hasn’t ruled on PBA, and I suspect that when they do they will go our way.

No point writing a long answer, so I will make it brief:

Watch the video.

He is talks about a woman's constitutional right. He meant the Roe decision, and Roe is the valid law right now whether we agree with it or not. The Hyde Amendment is also the law of the land and has changed over it's history, but is valid law under the USC. The clarification made by his campaign means that he doesn't want to alter the standards set in the Hyde amendment.

“And the Giuliani campaign noted later in the day that the former mayor would not seek to make any changes to current law, which restricts federal funding to cases of rape, incest and the life of the mother.”

Hope this helps.

Clinton vetoed partial birth abortion bills and provided international funding to support abortion. Bush has signed partial birth abortion bills.

Bush has done a lot to reduce abortions just by rolling back all the crap Clinton put in place.

Wow. So the government has to pay for the exercise of everyone's "constitutional rights"? I'll ignore for the moment the ridiculous idea that anyone has a Constitutional right to commit abortion. But let's carry that logic where it leads us. Presumably it means that the government should buy weapons for the poor, so they can exercise their 2nd Amendment rights. It also means the government should subsidize religious schools (or at least allow voucers), so the poor can exercise their 1st Amendment rights. But wait: Rudy thinks the 2nd Amendment can be suspended by a mere city mayor.

Two things are obvious: Rudy Kazootie is hopelessly muddled about Constitutional issues, but one thing is consistent: When it comes to taking a stand on specifics, he is on the liberal side of all these issues. Even ignoring issues of the morality of abortion, he clearly supports the redistributionist economic ideas which no conservative of any stripe should agree with.

You are whistling past the grave yard my friend.
That statement just cost Rudy the presidency.
He will either split the ticket if he gets the nomination, (3rd party candidate) eventually losing to the demoncrats. or not get the nomination period.

Star Parker and Dave Thomas for starters. It seems that if it had been up to several on FR, they and their kids would have been terminated at inception.

I didn’t need to give any sources. You asked for examples and they were provided. You made several claims which you have been unable to verify. Thus your points are worthless.
