TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.
"Ultimately, it's a constitutional right, and therefore if it's a constitutional right, ultimately, even if you do it on a state by state basis, you have to make sure people are protected," Giuliani said in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash in Florida's capital city.
A video clip of the then-mayoral candidate issuing a similar declaration in 1989 in a speech to the "Women's Coalition" appeared recently on the Internet.
"There must be public funding for abortions for poor women," Giuliani says in the speech that is posted on the video sharing site YouTube. "We cannot deny any woman the right to make her own decisions about abortion."
When asked directly Wednesday if he still supported the use of public funding for abortions, Giuliani said "Yes."
"If it would deprive someone of a constitutional right," he explained, "If that's the status of the law, yes."

You mean, by quoting them verbatim??? You Rudybots are not just evil, you're stupid as well. About what you'd expect from a bunch of babykillers.
Me either. I've been telling people for weeks that he is obsessed with "choice" and gun control and that no matter how badly he wants to be president, he WILL NOT be able to stop himself from acting on his obsessions. And he will act against the interests of conservatives, on these issues and others.
I think he would outpace Clinton in the executive-order department.
“So tough to talk about with someone on the other side of whatever stance you take yourself.
Its 100% emotion.
I hope one day we can get away from it.”
Abortion is the murder of an unborn human being.
You either support the murder of the most innocent of humans beings or you don’t.
W
You nailed it. This is one of the reasons why I stopped supporting Rudy. Social liberalism and fiscal conservatism are completely at odds with one another, because inevitably money has to pay for the social programs.
I think Rudy just dug his political grave here.
It's called using the bully pulpit to discourage abortions. Although it's (quote, unquote) the law, Presidents can issue executive orders stopping funding for abortions overseas or in military hospitals.
Is that another super secret plan out of the Rove playbook? Sorta like the super secret plan to defeat Campaign Finance Reform by signing the bill enacting Campaign Finance Reform?
About half of FR needs the tagline "Win at all costs! Screw the party platform!"
My words were in the middle of a paragraph specifically referring to abortion and you know it.
You love making assumptions, don't you? Where did I say that I supported Rudy? I only said that if you make abortion illegal, it will not stop all abortions. That does not mean that I support Rudy or that I support abortions. Anyway, you seem like a really nice man. I'm sure if they do outlaw abortions, you'll be personally running out to adopt some of the unwanted babies. Or you won't mind a huge increase in your taxes to support them, right? Or do you think that simply outlawing abortion will stop people, especially poorer, uneducated people, from having sex? That was my point, that a lot more than a change in law needs to be done to lower the abortion rate.
?!?!?!?!?!
Okay, time out here.
You admire him for being steadfast in his convictions. I get that.
But how in the name of all that is holy can you say that?
It's like showing that Rudy supports legal murder and then saying, "I respect Rudy for not flip-flopping on this issue as other candidates have done." That makes it okay?!?!?!
Rudy is far more upfront about his liberalism than the Rudyite FRiberals are.
You forgot...”Wife kills puppys” on that list of his hits...lol
Fine, let's turn that one on its head.
"It is my choice, my individual right, to murder someone I don't like. Society shouldn't put frown upon my act in anyway! Who cares, it's MY right!"
Personally opposed? PERSONALLY OPPOSED?
Let me say this A51. WHO. CARES. Actions speak louder than words: if Rudy is personally opposed to it like he claims, then WHY is he arguing for taxpayer-funded abortions?
Good. He should do lots and lots of talking, not just having his flacks give us third- and fourth-hand reassurances about the conservativeness of his positions.
I look forward to hearing Rudy's views on eminent domain. In depth. Let's have him take the entire Bill of Rights, one amendment at a time. :D
Too bad for him. If he had made an effort to change several years ago, he wouldn't be in this mess. As it is, he'd be accused of pandering if he changed now during an election (as any politician who suddenly changes their long-held views during an ELECTION). But this only confirms that he has one very screwed-up moral conscience.
But that's not why these posts are literally making me rattle with rage.
What's making me angry is that I'm seeing some people here trying to rationalize - RATIONALIZE! - this man's support for the murder of the unborn.
Something is very wrong with this picture.
Among women who already require and are eligible for state funding for an abortion, it’s pretty safe to say we’re not talking about financially self-sufficient households. I did not state that most unwanted pregnancies in the population as a whole end with state support of the child, if carried to term.
It’s a bunch of crap! Just about every pro-abortion candidate ever (including the ‘Rats) has made a statement about how they are “personally opposed to abortion, but still supports a woman’s right to choose.” This is nothing new, I’m sure that Hillary will make a similar if ever asked.
Face it, it is IMPOSSIBLE to sell conservatives on the notion that a pro-infanticide candidate is a conservative, or even a moderate.
Glad to hear this!
Here are some interesting FACTS:
Dick Gephardt’s NARAL rating: 30% (somewhat pro-life)
Tom Daschle’s NARAL rating: 50% (moderate)
Rudy Giuliani’s NARAL rating: 100% (VERY pro-abortion)
Thanks for informing us of this. I am crossing Rudy off my list. I had hoped he might have changed his position, in light of his cancer and of 9-11. I thought those personal experiences would have given him more respect for all lives, from conception to natural death.
That leaves Romney and Thompson. And Romney may still be wobbly on abortion.
Not much to choose from in this field of Repubs.
Thanks, wagglebee.
In light of this latest statement by Guiliani, I can no longer support him. He is a RINO.
Glad I could help.
