Time stands still for Hempfield teen in lockup (Another Duke LAX case in embryo?)
Tribune Review (Suburban Pittsburgh) ^ | 4 April 2007 | Patti Dobranski

A Hempfield Area High School sophomore spent 12 days in juvenile detention after authorities in Westmoreland County mistakenly charged him with making a March 11 bomb threat, in part because the district had not changed its clocks to reflect daylight-saving time.

My daughter goes to school with this boy. He's a good kid. Unfortunately for him, he's white and our poor excuse for a principal is big on political correctness.

The same community is prosecuting another good kid because (1)his father is a conservative state senator who defeated Tom Daschle's counterpart in the Pennsylvania senate in 2004 and (2)there was a tragic suicide last year involving one of the boy's friends because the father didn't lock up his gun and allowed the boy access to the family home while he was in Harrisburg last year on official business. The second reason, of course, is being used as cover for the real (first) reason.

One of many shocking facets of the story:

County juvenile detention officials wanted to keep Webb in custody, Andrews said. "They wanted him to have a mental health evaluation because he wouldn't admit to making the call."

"Of course, comrade, you may proclaim your innocence. However..."

The parents should sue the school district. This is horrible.

(Another Duke LAX case in embryo?)

No, because it sounds like an honest DA dropped the charges when he discovered the incompetence of the investigating officers.

I’m betting the boy will have his college education paid for before this is over. I hope my daughter and his other friends can talk him into coming back and completing his education there because it is one of the best districts in the state. Our taxes are pretty high as it is and the PC nazis such as the principal need to pay a real, personal price rather than just transfering the cost to the district taxpayers.

I’m betting nothing will happen, and the boy’s reputation will be tarnished forever. Happens to white male kids every day. There is no one left to defend them. If the Father was real man he would find said Principal in a dark alley and remove the use of his legs.

Lawsuit away! Anyone want to start a pool on how many zeros this is going to cost the Police and School district? How many people fired?

"They wanted him to have a mental health evaluation because he wouldn't admit to making the call."

LOL! That's not so rare and they think they're right. I've seen that before in the US, not the USSR.

There is reference to his being white. What is the ethnic background of the principal? How about the make up of the school? In any case, that Soviet style language of forcing the kid to confess sounds scary.

Can you imagine the outcry that would be going on now if this were a muslim kid accused? Even if was GUILTY there would be demands for his release and that he be given light punishment.

If the Father was real man he would find said Principal in a dark alley and remove the use of his legs.

Or pray for him to recognize the error of his ways, after confronting him with it.

Nothing makes a secular progressive liberal more uncomfortable than forgiving him and praying for him in his presence!

""Legally, we were OK. We didn't step on this kid's rights," said Mike Sturnick, supervisor for the juvenile probation office.

BS. You accused him of being insane, because he refused to confess. You should spend 12 days in jail little Mikey jackboot, plus 2 yrs for attempting to deny him hte right to a fair trail by demeaning him as insane, and attempting to coerce him into a confession.

" Webb's mother arranged home-schooling for him until he decides where to continue his education. He doesn't want to return to Hempfield. "

That's a good move, the school teachers are incompitent and their mental facilities have rotted. Both the school and the PA State Police should be sued for false inprisonment.

"How many people fired? "

None. Both the State Police and the teacher's unions will protect them.

It’s past time for civil discourse in this case. When Children are being attacked maliciously by the Authorities, then it’s time to retaliate with overwhelming force. Teach them a lesson they will never forget. All prey is fair game.

I won’t idly stand by and let the so called Authorities ruin my childrens lives, reputations, or future opportunities. They need to understand that they cannot hide behind buearacracy and not be held accountable. Regardless of the consequences people perpetuating this type of crime need to be dealt with severely and without quarter.

On the social front it seems these types of people can do no wrong. That mode of thinking needs to be changed.

My recollection in fighting an illegal expuslsion of a boy in my care is that there is a Civil Rights Law (Section 1986?) that allows civil rights lawsuit to be lodged against the person making the violation, thus successfully piercing the employer’s organizational veil. This law has been successful in lodging lawsuits directly against school teachers, principals, and superintendents personally. Under this law, they have no protection; they are personally liable.

“Happens to white male kids every day.”

I’ve seen it attempted against a good boy of Hispanic origin, but they failed!

In the principal's office, administrators demanded that Webb admit to calling in the bomb threat, he said.

"I wasn't going to admit to something I didn't do," he said. "Me and God know I didn't do it." ...

County juvenile detention officials wanted to keep Webb in custody, Andrews said. "They wanted him to have a mental health evaluation because he wouldn't admit to making the call."

...

And people wonder why if innocnent people ever confess to crimes they didn't commit. Of course they do especially when law enforcement, DA's and others start telling them that they will be punished more if they insist upon proclaiming their innocence. A few more weeks and they probably could have broken this kid too.

In answer to your first question, lily white liberal. To your second, about 10% including my daughter if part Asian counts as an ethnic minority.
