Giuliani Surmounts Expectations In N.H.
Boston Globe ^ | 4/4/07

HAMPTON FALLS, N.H. -- The guests at Thomas and Ellen Christo 's home on New Hampshire's Seacoast on Monday night knew Rudolph W. Giuliani's history well -- his three marriages, his support for abortion rights, even recent news of a federal investigation targeting his former business partner and police commissioner, Bernard Kerik .

But as Giuliani walked under red, white, and blue bunting to arrive at the first New Hampshire house party of his presidential campaign, camera flashes popped and the crowd brimmed with anticipation. When the former mayor of New York whipped off his glasses, stood in front of an American flag, and pronounced himself ready to take the fight to the terrorists, people nodded .

"If I was a terrorist, I'd be really nervous of Rudy Giuliani," said Ron Vars of East Kingston, who owns a telecommunications brokerage. "I don't care about this personal stuff; he's a leader. I have an ex-wife. I don't have two of them, but that's OK."

Political observers have long predicted that Giuliani's early strong support in the 2008 Republican presidential primary would dissipate as conservative voters learned about his past support for gun control, gay rights, and abortion rights. In addition, the thinking went, some conservatives would be repelled to learn of his sometimes chaotic personal life and the tarnished records of some of his business associates.

Yet as details about Giuliani's life and record have emerged in politically astute New Hampshire, many voters say their support remains firm. They maintain that his success in New York City and his views on taxes and fighting terrorism -- shaped by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 -- outweigh any personal foibles and positions on social issues that stray from the GOP party line.

That’s an odd poll. I am not sure I buy it.

Oh, right now I absolutely buy that poll. We have our work cut out for us to convince the sheeple not to vote for Hillary or Obama. There are people stupid enough to vote for them just because they would be the first woman/first black President.

And regardless of who the Dem nominee is, the MSM will portray our candidate as the antichrist and the Dem as the second coming.

With Rudy you’re still getting a dim. The only difference is the R in his name.

You may be right, but I don’t hear that from people I talk to. They don’t like Hillary around these parts. Even the lefties.

You are touching on a subject the press barely understands, and seldom discusses in Chief Executives. When a man is "comfortable in his own skin," he has a special self-confidence that lets him deal with subjects, friends, and opponents effectively.

Reagan had that skill in spades. Other political leaders have shown this to a lesser extent. And note, this is independent of the politics of the the person. What this article suggests, between the lines, is that Rudy has a certain amount of this same characteristic.

Truman had it. FDR had it. TR had it. Nixon lacked it, badly. It drove him to paranoia.

AMEN!!!

If we lose the WOT, everything else will also be lost. I give France one more generations until there is no more France. The country may still be called France, but the culture and society will no longer be recognizable.

Ahhhhhh, what's this little gem???

(((small ping)))

Giuliani said ... If you could do it in New York City, you could do it in Washington."

See, this is why I get 'confused'. (kidding)

In one breath Rudy and his Rooters say what he did in NYC is irrelevant as NYC isn't the USA - in the next Rudy himself says if it worked in NY it will work anywhere. Which means we then have this:

I'm sorry you can't have it both ways. And here we have Rudy himself saying what most of us already knew, Rudy would 'rule' the USA like he did NYC - by Imperial Fiat.

And that my FRiends doesn't wash in a Constitutional Republic.

(that's it I'm outta here and have to get work done. Have a nice day all and see ya tomorrow morning)

"...If you could do it in New York City, you could do it in Washington."

Yep, just ask the hundreds of customers of the Washington Madame, who will reveal how many politicians in Washington "did it".

Great catch. It dovetails with Rudy saying he would appoint strict constructionists - while also saying presidents appoint judges that reflect their views. Given Rudy's past stated opinions on Roe v. Wade and federal gun-control laws, his views are not compatible with strict constructionism. Therefore, he cannot say both at the same time and have both be truthful.

I just thought that I’d note that an anti-Rudy doesn’t think NYC is part of the United States. The things we can learn on Free Republic :-)

Rudy, a guy who raised moeny for a militant gay group with strong ties to an anti-war communist group, is CERTAINLY not the man to prosecute the WOT.
