THE END OF RUDY'S BLISS (the Rudy/Judi Barbara Walters disaster)
NY POST ^ | April 3, 2007 | JOHN PODHERETZ

Posted on 04/03/2007 4:02:00 AM PDT by Liz

The Giuliani '08 juggernaut just ran head-on into Podhoretz's First and Last Law of Politics, namely: No politician seeking the nation's highest office can do as much damage to another as he can do to himself. --SNIP-- The question before us today is whether Rudy Giuliani committed a blunder of comparable proportions by consenting to a Barbara Walters request for a joint interview with him and his wife Judi - during the course of which he said, embarrassingly, that he would welcome her presence at Cabinet meetings and listen to her closely on issues relating to health care.

Until that moment, he had handled his presidential bid as perfectly as could be imagined......his four months of bliss came to an end when ABC News released the first snippets of the Walters interview last Thursday..... Walters moment only revealed that Rudy ......thought he could say something cute about his wife that really wasn't cute at all - seemed perhaps more about currying favor with her than about finding the appropriate balance between portraying a loving marriage and depicting a future presidency. Of course, what Rudy was doing with Barbara Walters was an effort....- to neutralize the damaging effect of his marital history by being open and clear and honest. He did that well.....then he muffed it.

News of the Walters interview began a 96-hour ordeal for Giuliani that included the leak of his grand-jury testimony in the case of his former police commissioner's ties to a crooked contractor - potentially his most serious liability - and the revelations that Judi Giuliani has actually been married more than twice and had worked for a medical-equipment firm that used (and thus killed) dogs.

One of our best presidents was an actor. If he does so well in liberal states why isn’t he a democrat. VOTE RUDY HILLARY’S CHOICE FOR PRESIDENT!

Donna Hanover had abandoned the marriage to build a show-biz career. Judi Nathan put her career on hold to care for Rudy when he had cancer. I’d say Judi is the loyal one. Rudy’s kids were at his wedding to Judi, so he hardly walked away from them.

By social liberalism we mean his support for abortion, civil unions for homosexuals, gun-control, and hate crimes legislation, off the top of my head.

In your little rundown of NYC fiscal policies you mentioned he lowered the capital gains tax and eliminated the marriage penalty tax, could you provide some more detail about NYC's capital gains taxes and what the marriage penalty was that he eliminated?

For the record, he trails Hillary in Ohio.

It would help.

Hahaha...as much bashing as you guys do of anyone who's ever so much as been seen with Rudy, I am finding that just a tiny bit hard to believe. ; )

Jane Wyman was the one with the adultry problem, not Ronald Reagan. It was years later that Ronald Reagan married Nancy. The man could not help the fact that his wife LEFT HIM. You cannot compare.

Donna Hanover abandoned the marriage AFTER Rudy had the affair with his aide. I don’t know about you, but it would be a cold day in hell that I would be lovey dovey with a cheating louse as a husband. I think she is nuts for staying with him after the FIRST known affair.

If being estranged from your kids is the topic, Reagan wins hands down. His kids with Nancy publicly rejected him, and in fact campaigned for Democrats! In addition, Nancy was pregnant when they got married. Important stuff? I don't think so...

I haven’t been part of a discussion about adultery or divorce on this thread, so I don’t really know what you’re talking about.

I believe a Rudy/Hillary contest would pit the two worst candidates for the presidency in American history.

Duncan, Fred, Our motto should be ABR anybody but Rudy.Believe me our conservative values are at risk from our own party!Everything we worked for. We made this the party of the family and family values. We worked so hard for George Bush, to have flaming liberals with questionable family values come in and run as reps. You now have New Yorkers like Hannity saying , well Rudy is good on terror. Well, Mitt ran the Olympics after the attack on 911. Fred stands to keep America strong.Duncan is good on immigration and national security. sure Rudy has the press, sure Rudy has rich liberal friends. he and his rudybots are so liberal i wonder when the check from Soros will come.

“I find it very hard to believe that anyone with high conservative standards prefers Giuliani to Thompson, and doesn’t even know Thompson’s record.”

Im sure he’s a fine conservative TALKER. But what did he ever actually DO for conservatism? Talk is cheap. As for Guiliani, get used to Republicans with “high conservative standards” backing him. We want to win in ‘08, not win points for being “principled.” The times are dangerous—and the Democratic opposition is armed to the teeth with higher registrations than ever before, more media backing and more money. Meanwhile many formerly red states are turning more and more purple—in places like PA and OH and FL. Only somebody like Rudy has a fighting chance of turning the tide. That’s reality. You may not like it—but it doesn’t change the facts on the ground.

Not exactly like that. : ) My point is that Judith could be the nicest person on earth, and I think you guys would hate her guts just because she loves Rudy. I rather doubt a return to nursing would do much to redeem her with the rock-throwers around here.

It is something how when the posts for any other candidate are funny on here . They stay on. Post any thing about Rudy and the posts are deleted. I wonder what they would do if they got the White House.

You really hate NY.

Does that include everyone who died in the World Trade Center on 9-11?

Please I beg you, tell me what Rudy will do against our enemies that no other candidate is capable of doing?”

Win the election in ‘08 and thereby keep the WH and Congress out of treasonous Democratic hands.

As I recall, Nancy was not well loved during those early years. She was considered cold and too involved with decision making.

Ron and Nancy married and had a baby. It happens. It has happened all through history - the good news is they didn't abort the baby.

The denizens of DU could not be more vicious. There is something visceral going on here. It’s not pretty. One of the Rudy haters is neighbors with Judi’s mother! Howdy, neighbor...
