Friends bet that Thompson will run. He clearly wants to try, and his wife, Jeri, is all for it. But he wants to avoid the pitfalls encountered by Democrat Barack Obama, who may have hurt himself by starting his campaign too quickly.

Nice. Smart. It's too early to bet on any one candidate, but so far, Thompson hasn't screwed anything up. I'm encouraged.

Former New York mayor Giuliani has dropped precipitously, from 44 to 31 percent, amid attacks on his ideology and personal life.

I was assured by the Rudybots that this was an impossiblity.....

It is pretty clear that if you look closely at all the other candidates, he has the best chance to win (sorry, Newt, but you also have baggage even though you have great solutions).

I hope that this is the answer I have been waiting for...we will see.

I have made no contribution and expressed no preference for any other candidates...none seemed "right"!

Looks like Tommy Thompson is also running.

Theoretically, the GOP coudl have a Thompson/Thompson ticket. Now that would be keeping it simple.

I've been shouting his name for over three months but it is still over 19 months until election day.

"Their appreciation of him stems not from his eight years as a U.S. senator from Tennessee but from his role as Manhattan district attorney on the TV series " Law & Order."

Well, that's a slap in the face. LOL

"Thompson's critics assert that, bored with his lucrative career as an actor, he is enjoying the 15 minutes of fame created by a chance TV interview and will not run..."

Sounds like someone on this board...

I'm in for Fred, all the way. I am a bit concerned about T.Thompson throwing his hat in the ring, and I do think the name confusion will draw some away from who they thought is the REAL Thompson. I have to wonder why T.T. did it, and who put him up to it. Who is T.T. aligned with?

:O)

The guy who ran as a pro-choice candidate twice in Tennessee, is the Party's conservative savior?

U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson says he seldom hears about abortion in campaign travels throughout Tennessee and hopes the issue is downplayed at the Republican National Convention. The Tennessee Republican, a pro-choice defender in a party with an anti-abortion tilt, is preparing for next week's convention in San Diego. He said the party must avoid distracting issues and focus on electing Bob Dole as president. "We need to concentrate on what brings us together and not what divides us," Thompson said in an interview with The Tennessean published Tuesday. Thompson said he opposes making early-term abortions a crime, as some Republicans would like to do with a constitutional amendment. "But I don't think you should bolt on one issue. I'm still not convinced platforms are a good idea. We know what we believe in and I don't think we need to write it all down in a document," Thompson said. (AP, 8/6/96)

In just three weeks, Fred Thompson has transformed the contest for the Republican presidential nomination. It is not merely that he has come from nowhere to double digits in polls. He is the talk of GOP political circles because he is filling the conservative void in the field.

WOO HOO!! Full steam A-FRed!

My check is ready if Fred officially throws his hat in. I've been getting these fundraising letters from the RNC, and I've ignored them all lately. Fred is the only major candidate that's going to get my cash anytime soon. And if he wins, I want him to clean house at the RNC.

Now it's my turn to be up too early. The darned mutt was up woofin' at her water dish at 4 am and I couldn't get back to sleep!

In any case, I think Thompson would be agreat choice. He's a Conservative AND, with wide, positive acceptance, has a genuine shot at winning. A fine bonus is that he can think well on his feet, far, far better than any dim that I can think of.
