In just three weeks, Fred Thompson has transformed the contest for the Republican presidential nomination. It is not merely that he has come from nowhere to double digits in polls. He is the talk of GOP political circles because he is filling the conservative void in the field.
Republican activists have complained for months that none of the Big Three -- Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney-- fits the conservative model of a conservative leader for a conservative party. The party faithful have been waiting for another Ronald Reagan. But in conversations with them the past year, nobody mentioned Thompson as the messiah until he appeared March 11 on "Fox News Sunday."
Thompson was surprised by the reaction to his statement that he was "giving some thought" to running. In the first Gallup Poll that listed Thompson (conducted March 23-25), he scored 12 percent -- amazing for someone out of public life for more than four years who has not campaigned. More important is his backing within the political community. Buyer's remorse is expressed by several House members who endorsed Romney, the former Massachusetts governor.

Oh, I DO like Fred. It's those who are already mumbling about his religion that have me pissed.
They have me believing there are a lot of DUers here who are going to just chop away at whoever's the frontrunner.

"Their appreciation of him stems not from his eight years as a U.S. senator from Tennessee but from his role as Manhattan district attorney on the TV series " Law & Order."
Well, that's a slap in the face. LOL
"Thompson's critics assert that, bored with his lucrative career as an actor, he is enjoying the 15 minutes of fame created by a chance TV interview and will not run..."
Sounds like someone on this board...
I'm in for Fred, all the way. I am a bit concerned about T.Thompson throwing his hat in the ring, and I do think the name confusion will draw
some away from who they thought is the REAL Thompson. I have to wonder why T.T. did it, and who put him up to it. Who is T.T. aligned with?
:O)

Tommy Thompson is only doing this so as to what Dennis Kucincih is doing, collecting campaign funds so that they can retire on them. I have repeatedly reported on how the policticans can accumulate huge retirement funds tax-free before and I will do it again. But you people are stupid to think that they are doing because they think they are serious contenders. One of these days I will research how much these ripoff artists have stolen from us taxpayers. Ex-gov Gray Davis supposedly had a campaign fund of about $140 million when we kicked him out of office. If he did what other politicians have done with their campaign funds, he has a pension fund of $140 million. How do you like that?

Actually- for me anyway- this isn't ABOUT Rudy. Or Hunter, or McCain, Romney, Brownback, Ron Paul or ANY of the other candidates.
I don't hate any of them- admire and respect them all, in fact.
Fred can win the nomination AND the election. Not because he's right on this issue, or because he did or didn't vote for this or that legislation..
Fred can win..because he's an American.

Congrats, then--you Rudyhaters ....can't beat him intellectually or on the issues, On the issues of abortion, gun control and special rights for homosexuals, what could be more "intellectual" than "he's on the wrong side for the vast majority of Republicans". It's a fact, not an attack.

These @ssholes passed tax legislation so they never have to pay any taxes on their huge campaign funds untill they take it out as salary, and most of them only use the funds to pay for their expenses(?). Talk to me and I will explain how they get millions tax free.
Very few people understand how they designed the tax law to benefit themselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

C'mon, Darkwolf, even as someone who has written well-read vanities here about the plausibly conservative values of Giuliani, I have to assert that the "scandals" brought forth by Giuliani opponents are largely reasons to question his conservative values. And, besides, now is the time for Giuliani to show he can weather the storm of scandals... not after he's won the nomination and is facing the Big Democratic Media Machine.
The photos of Giuliani dressed as a drag queen aren't personal peccadillos, they illustrate a decision by Giuliani to embrace the homosexual radical left. The three ugly marriages don't merely call into question his personal life, but they are intriguing evidence on whether Giuliani merely went pro-choice because he needed to to govern NY, or whether he has apostacized from his once pro-life values.
If Giuliani is flipping back and forth for electability on conservative issues, I want to know that any latest positions which seem he has remained a conservative at heart (i.e., promising to nominate a candidate like Roberts, Alito or Scalia) are because he has decided that being a conservative is the way to rule as President, not just the way to get the Republican nomination.
I'm open to voting for Giuliani; I'm particularly encouraged by his comments about the USSC, but he's got to talk to us.
