Texas FReepers, Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 21, 12:00 Noon.
We are so very fortunate that Freeper "leofl" has arranged to give us a tour of Fort Hood. Fort Hood is located near Killeen, West of I-35 exits at Temple, Belton area. Thanks so much Leo, for making this happen. Please note if you are interested in joining us. We're still working on a few details but for now here's Leo's note to us......
"I will take you on-post to both the 1st Cav museum and the 4th ID area. I will also show you some of the sights and maybe sounds of Fort Hood. Bring your cameras as you can take pictures at the museums. Other places are clearly marked and I assure you you will have a great time. This is a family friendly outing but there are some things everyone should know.
Fort Hood is now a restricted base. We can get on-base but be sure to bring:
A copy of your insurance card and registration for your automobile
Proper Government ID ie driver's license, State id etc
Do not bring any weapons even if you are a CCL licensee. This is federal property and it makes the guys with bigger guns crazy!!! lol
A fun attitude and a comfortable pair of walking shoes.
Children are welcome and appreciated!!! Let them see what some of our brave heroes are doing to protect their future. Besides I'm a big kid at heart!!"
Just good old caliche mud.
It is nasty stuff. They haul in river sediment to cover the yards with before putting down the sod. Most grasses don't grow well on the bare caliche. Those that do, you probably wouldn't want in your yard. Doesn't seem to slow the fire ant's mound building down though. They probably like the stuff.
I found this description:
If you live in the high plains of Texas, New Mexico, or Arizona then you might have caliche. True caliche was formed by thousands of years of rain pounding directly onto bare soil. The rain compacted the soil into a "cap" called the caprock that is several feet thick. It can be softened by soaking with water, but unless you get microbes growing in it the cap will solidify again. For those of you not familiar with it, imagine modeling clay left out to dry. It is that hard. Jackhammer hard
He did it, with the help of his "protege", another Massachusetts "fixture"
And they, and the other like minded traitor 'Rats are about to do it again.
I see you live in Killeen. Don’t know if you know Leofl from Killeen. How about joining us. We’d love having you. Hope you can make it. I’ll be going to the shoot out also, if I’m back from CA.
Don't think I know Leofl, but I'm really bad with names, FReeper or real. I plan to join you, unless I've got some other commitment that I don't know about.
Wives tend to generate those, mine more than many, because she often teaches sewing classes on Saturdays, in Plano, Frisco, Dallas, Austin or San Antonio, with the first and the last two being the most common. If she has a class scheduled that day, I would likely have to watch the great nieces. If that was here in Killeen, I'd bring 'em. They were on post weekend before last for an Easter Picnic, and then we went up to look at my (claustrophobic) office space. But it might be like last weekend, when I traveled to Sherman to watch them while she taught her class.
We’d love to meet you and your family on this Tour. Any interest?
This is a Saturday. You have Med appts on Saturdays? We’d love to have you join us.
I don't know. Let's pose the Question to our leader.
You’ll be on our ping list. We’re gathering between 11-12 Noon so perhaps that will give you enough time to make the trip. Maybe a few others might wish to carpool from Houston?
Say, let’s have a freep where you live...So Pacific.
Yet give ‘em all a salute for me!
Thanks S.S.
Thanks. Marked the 21st on my calendar. Hopefully.
Come join us.
Hope all’s going well. I’ve been up your way in SouthLake.
Since I live about 1/2 mile from where y’all are meeting I guess we’d better be there. Hey Leofl - how ‘bout lunch at Rosita’s?
I’m sorry about your condition. We’ll be there for you.
I’m so sorry about your nephew. He’s our hero. I’ll try to look him up. Best Regards.
We’re glad to have you join us centexan. Look forward to meeting you. :-) Perhaps you’ll lead us to your favorite eating joint?
