Gingrich decries bilingual ballots

By KASIE HUNT, Associated Press Writer 34 minutes ago

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich equated bilingual education Saturday with "the language of living in a ghetto" and mocked requirements that ballots be printed in multiple languages.

"The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up" to vote, said Gingrich, who is considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. He made the comments in a speech to the National Federation of Republican Women.

"The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. ... We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto," Gingrich said to cheers from the crowd of more than 100.

"Citizenship requires passing a test on American history in English. If that's true, then we do not have to create ballots in any language except English," he said.

In the past, Gingrich has supported making English the nation's official language. He's also said all American children should learn English and that other languages should be secondary in schools.

In 1995, for example, he said bilingualism poses "long term dangers to the fabric of our nation" and that "allowing bilingualism to continue to grow is very dangerous."

"Newt for President. GWB for garbage collector"

Amen to that.

Newt is absolutely right on this issue. Still he's not electable and I would not vote for him for various very valid reasons.

Does GWB even speak English? Sometimes I am not exactly sure what the heck he is saying.

I agree he won't be elected. He won't even be the party's candidate; BUT he may cause them to rethink their positions.

There are numerous places in numerous cities across the nation that are "spanish only". Certain parts of Houston, Miami, etc. are are basically 100% spanish speaking.

Newt is right. A house divided cannot stand.

I don't think Newt is electable either. He belongs as an adviser or at a think tank, writing about his deep thoughts.

If I am not mistaken out of control federal courts have overturned several state laws that dealt with English as an official language of government. On what basis, equal protection or some other baloney I am not sure.

Newt is not electable in the same way that Hillary is not electable.

In a recent poll 50% of the electorate said they wouldn't vote for Hillary under any circumstances.

None the less the dems are hell bent on putting up Hilary for election.

So what the hey.

Why not put up Newt.

The trouble with bilingual ballots is that there are too many languages other than English spoken in the US. If we must have bilingual ballots, they should be in two languages only: English and Latin.

How could Latinos object to that?

Printing up special ballots for Vikings would rune our country.

Besides, all the Scandinavians know English anyway...
