Alpo® Brand Prime Cuts In Gravy Canned Dog Food Voluntary Nationwide Recall
No Dry Purina Products Involved
St. Louis, Missouri, March 30, 2007
Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning today that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities.
Earlier today the FDA announced the finding of melamine in products related to the March 16 Menu Foods recall, and advised Purina of the source of the contaminated supply. Purina then determined that it had received some quantity from the suspect supplier. The company proactively notified the FDA and immediately began this recall process
Purina is confident that the contaminated wheat gluten has been isolated to this limited production quantity of ALPO Prime Cuts canned products.
The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a “Best Before Feb. 2009” date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.
Purina's 5.3-ounce Mighty Dog® pouch products, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution on March 16 as part of the Menu Foods recall. ONLY Mighty Dog pouch products and specific date codes of ALPO Prime Cuts canned dog food are being recalled.
Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall – including ALPO Prime Cuts dry. In addition, no other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply.
Consumers should immediately stop feeding ALPO Prime Cuts products with the above-listed date codes to their dogs and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet.
Purina guarantees all of its products, and consumers can receive the full replacement value of the recalled products. Consumers can visit us at www.purina.com or call 1-800-218-5898, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, to receive more information.
Purina is fully cooperating with the FDA and made the decision to voluntarily recall this product in consultation with the FDA.

Not sure what the M/D stands for, but it is only available via a vet prescription. It is for accelerated weight loss but good for cats with urinary tract issues, which one of my cats has. The Hills press release said they are reformulating the M/D and will make the new formula available soon. Meanwhile, they're eating Purina DM- again, from a vet only. It's for weight management, and I checked, not wheat gluten. Check the ingredients on you cat food. If you see wheat gluten, switch.
The vet says he has hemorrhaging colitis. They gave him IV's and he's on med's and special food (Science diet wet a/d). He ate something that caused this, whether it was the dog food, fertilizer, an M&M my son dropped, who knows. We'll keep an eye on him for possibly more IV's and if the illness continues - specific tests related to the dog food recall will be done in the next day or two.

I just bought some Natures Logic through Amazon. Price wasn't bad.
And found some of the Alpo recalled cans in the pantry. I stopped using wet food about a month ago. Now I'm worried about dry.

I think a lot of us will being feeding our pets differently from now on.
I just checked my dogs' generic brand milk bones. Sure enough, wheat gluten is a main ingredient. Think I'll go check out some homemade dog treat recipes.
It's raining cats and dogs here (no pun intended) so what else am I going to do. :)
I found a great natural pet food manufacturer here in Connecticut called Miller Foods. Their brand name is Oma's Pride. The local ABC affiliate did a report on them. They are getting pretty popular right now. If you go to their website, there is information on where to find it in your state (if it is available). You should check it out. I am concerned that with a lot of people feeding their dogs and cats table scraps that our pets are not getting all the vitamins they need (veggies, etc).
My dog had been eating the Iams (also on the recalled list). We brought him for blood work. The vet noticed something with his kidneys. We are bringing him this week for more tests. He is 12 and my baby so I hope it's just his age but we aren't taking any chances.
The scary thing is that most of our food - such as the box of Hot Chocolate I just bought - says the product is distributed in the US. My question is, where was it (and other food) made?
Why do they have to use wheat gluten?

Chocolate is only toxic to dogs, and it's the theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine acts as a diuretic and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle.
I'm not concerned about the ingredients in dog food as long as they are uncontaminated and good quality. Again, animals are not humans and as such a human diet is not necessarily better. Meat and fish by-products plus some grains and vegetables are fine. Food prep scraps are probably better than table scraps, as cooked "people food" tends to be high in salt and processed fat.
I got through to Hill's yesterday morning and talked to a nice gentleman who explained it all to my satisfaction. Prior to calling Hills I went on to their site and researched the complete ingredients of all of the dry cat and dog food I have every used from Prescription diet and found that the only one that had wheat gluten WAS the Feline Dry MD. All of the others use corn gluten. This is exactly what he told me without me telling him I had done the research. I was concerned since I feed my dog the WD Dry Canine.

Regarding the Del Monte Recall. Look at all of the Ol Roy products. I believe that is the major brand that Walmart Sells!

Ol Roy pouches and cans is what we gave our dog for about 2 years. We would mix it with Iams.
Silly us, treating him to special food.
He had to be put down on Monday.
Why won't they identify the supplier? How can they get away with that? If I understand correctly they are also concealing numbers of known illnesses and deaths.
