LA Times Admits It "Oversimplified" Views of Planned Parenthood Founder Margaret Sanger

Following this NewsBusters post on Wednesday (3/21/07), the Los Angeles Times has admitted it "oversimplified the eugenics views of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger."

On Wednesday, we took issue with this article by Stephanie Simon in the Los Angeles Times that stated that Sanger "did not support coerced birth control." Simon also wrote that Sanger had merely "associate[d] with proponents of eugenics, the philosophy that only the most worthy should be allowed to reproduce"

In our article, we demonstrated that Sanger's own words suggested the opposite. In her 1922 book, The Pivot of Civilization, Sanger wrote, "Every feeble-minded girl or woman of the hereditary type, especially of the moron class, should be segregated during the reproductive period." For men, Sanger recommended the "policy of immediate sterilization." In other writings, Sanger referred to some members of humanity as "human weeds."

After my post, I wrote to the Readers Representative at the Times, and I provided a link to my article. I received a response indicating that the paper would be "running a correction."

From today's LA Times (Sunday, March 25, 2007):

FOR THE RECORD:

Antiabortion efforts: An article in Wednesday's Section A about antiabortion efforts in black communities oversimplified the eugenics views of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger in saying she did not support coerced birth control. Sanger did not support measures to limit the population of minorities through coerced contraception. She did, however, support forced sterilization of the mentally disabled.

There you go. But here's another reminder about Sanger for the Times:

Margaret Sanger on eugenics: "the most adequate and thorough avenue to the solution of racial, political and social problems." ("The Eugenic Value of Birth Control Propaganda," Birth Control Review, October 1921, page 5) (link) (link)

Should you care, continue the debate among yourselves.

They also came clean about how they have "oversimplified" the dangers over Islamoterrorism.

An article by Stephanie Simon in today's Los Angeles Times (Wednesday, March 21, 2007) states that Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger "did not support coerced birth control." However, Sanger's own words suggest otherwise (all emphasis mine):

"[M]odern society ... is now confronted with the problem of protecting itself and its future generations against the inevitable consequences of this long-practised policy of LAISSER-FAIRE.

"The emergency problem of segregation and sterilization must be faced immediately. Every feeble-minded girl or woman of the hereditary type, especially of the moron class, should be segregated during the reproductive period. Otherwise, she is almost certain to bear imbecile children, who in turn are just as certain to breed other defectives. The male defectives are no less dangerous. Segregation carried out for one or two generations would give us only partial control of the problem. Moreover, when we realize that each feeble-minded person is a potential source of an endless progeny of defect, we prefer the policy of immediate sterilization, of making sure that parenthood is absolutely prohibited to the feeble-minded.

"This, I say, is an emergency measure ..."

(From Chapter 4, "The Fertility of the Feeble-Minded," from the book by Sanger, The Pivot of Civilization (1922).) (link)

The Times' Simon also wrote that Sanger merely "associate[d] with proponents of eugenics, the philosophy that only the most worthy should be allowed to reproduce" (emphasis mine). Again, Sanger's own words reveal that she actually advocated the philosophy.

"Society is divided into three groups ... The third group are those irresponsible and reckless ones having little regard for the consequences of their acts, or whose religious scruples prevent their exercising control over their numbers. Many of this group are diseased, feeble-minded, and are of the pauper element dependent upon the normal and fit members of society for their support. There is no doubt in the minds of all thinking people that the procreation of this group should be stopped. For if they are not able to support and care for themselves, they should certainly not be allowed to bring offspring into this world for others to look after." (Speech quoted in "Birth Control: What It Is, How It Works, What It Will Do." The Proceedings of the First American Birth Control Conference. Held at the Hotel Plaza, New York City, November 11-12, 1921. Published by the Birth Control Review, Gothic Press, pages 172 and 174.) (The speech was delivered on November 18, 1921. link)

And:

Eugenics: "the most adequate and thorough avenue to the solution of racial, political and social problems." ("The Eugenic Value of Birth Control Propaganda," Birth Control Review, October 1921, page 5) (link) (link)

There's a lot more. (Did I mention that Sanger once spoke to the women's branch of the Ku Klux Klan in Silver Lake, New Jersey in 1926?)

From today's Los Angeles Times (all emphasis mine):

Antiabortion activists are fighting back with their own appeals to black pride. In particular, they target Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger, as a racist intent on eliminating people of color. One popular flier — recently mailed to 10,000 homes in minority neighborhoods in Waco, Texas — declares, "Lynching is for amateurs" and compares "Klan Parenthood" clinics to Nazi death camps.

Sanger did associate with proponents of eugenics, the philosophy that only the most worthy should be allowed to reproduce. But she did not support coerced birth control ..."

Any chance we'll see a correction from the Times? Anyone? ... Hello?

Just like they "oversimplified" the views of Joseph Stalin and Fidel Castro and every other social engineering psycho on the planet.

It was once said that a lie can go around the world before truth can get its pants on.

Good to see this is not always the case any more. Thanks for posting.

Now you see why genocide is an appropriate word to use when talking about abortion. It is a holocaust ongoing in the minority communities.

and newsbusters and conservative columnists never report that republican, pro-life, religious catholics and evangelicals vote for title X funding every year and then go home to their constituents and preach at pro-life functions about the ills of planned parenthood.

Sanger's views were roughly the same as Hitler's and have ultimately resulted in far more deaths -- that should be "simple" enough for the LA Slimes.

It is indeed The Stupid Party. Planned Parenthood has spent millions trying to defeat Republicans for years and yet some of the same stupid "conservative" Republicans turn around and give the millions and more right back to PP. The GOP controlled both houses and the presidency for several years, why did they not defund Planned Parenthood? The million$$$ simply continued to flow to those who hate the GOP (and the unborn and Catholics.)

And now we see "conservatives" backing Rudy! Heaven help us. We need to keep fighting politically, but more importantly, we must pray and fast for our country.

---"After he was elected mayor, Giuliani delivered on these campaign promises -- and more. His 1994 and 1998 tax returns show $500 in donations to Planned Parenthood, the country's largest abortion provider. In 1996, the mayor issued a proclamation declaring it "Planned Parenthood Day" in New York City and praising the group's eugenicist founder, Margaret Sanger.---"

She isn't the first to advocate sterilization of the disabled. It was Virginia state policy in the 20s. I guess the Nazis sort of took it out of vogue...

I wish this information were more widely known. There are people out there that just do not care one way or the other. I am related to some of them. Breaks my heart!
