FDA finds another poison in the recalled Pet Food -Presser @ 10:00 am EDT
Pet Connection.com and Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | Friday March 30, 2007 | Milwaukee_Guy

"Testing by the FDA and at least one lab independent of the agency found melamine, a chemical used in plastics and household textiles, in samples of the recalled pet food and in one of its ingredients -- wheat gluten -- said an FDA official and another source close to the investigation. Neither wanted to be identified prior to the FDA's formal announcement this morning."

"The FDA has not determined how melamine got into the pet food. Melamine is used as a fertilizer in Asia and has several commercial and industrial uses."

That's what I'm doing now. There are lots of resources on the Internet.

I found name brand human baby food works. At $0.69 a bottle it's cheaper than the overpriced and overrated canned premium pet food.

If dry food becomes an issue, that will be a pain to replace until the smoke clears from this fiasco.

>>>Is your position that more government is the answer? If a private inspection service could be established with labeling, I would accept that. In general, I support market driven country of origin labeling. If there is a demand to know where the food product is from, then the market will provide that information. I think this would be very effective for items like fruits and vegetables.
With ingredients that make up a small part of a final product, that method would not likely be as effective. What would the country of origin be for the pet food? Also, with the result of a poor product leading to sickness and possibly death, caveat emptor may not be as effective as in the case of other consumer goods.

This is such a bunch of bull crap.
My dog used to chew off pieces of his toys and it would pass through him.

He is now dead and had all the symptoms of rat poisoning.

When they put him down, they had to give him 4 injections,
small dog, 26 pounds, used to weigh 36, doc said bad circulation,.........it was the blood clots from the rat poison.

I am getting sicker by the minute.

Updated: Karen Roebuck of the Pittsburg Tribune-Review, who broke the story earlier this morning that melamine, not aminopterin, had been found in the tested foods, asked if any of the wheat gluten had found its way into the human food supply.

The response: “At this point we are not aware that any of that went into human food.” They do know the company that supplied the contaminated wheat gluten, and are tracking its shipments, but they aren’t disclosing the name of the company.

They are, however, doing “100 percent review and sampling of all wheat gluten from China.”

More to come.

I feel your pain. It's very stressful having to stick our 5 year old male tabby every day to administer a subcutaneous Ringer's lactate solution. He is getting better.

Document everything you can regarding your departed pet and see if your vet will cooperate.

Report your information to Petconnection.com and your local FDA office and make your vet report through his channels.

I don't mean for this thread to compound your loss. You didn't do anything wrong.

Hopefully we can save other pets and improve the safety of the entire food chain.

The FDA has not ruled out Aminopterin at all. Their testing simply found only melamine.

The New York State Agriculture Dept. is a state of the art lab tasked since 2001 with TESTING FOR FOOD CHAIN TERRORISM.

"New York State is home to two laboratories that are part of federal emergency lab networks, created through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security after 9-11 to keep the nation’s animals and food supply safe. The New York State Food Laboratory is part of the Federal Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) and as such, is capable of running a number of unique poison/toxin tests on food, including the test that identified Aminopterin. The New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University is a member of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network and thus, is uniquely qualified to investigate the causes of animal health emergencies, like the sudden deaths of dogs and cats from the recently recalled pet food."

Hey, call me paranoid, but I wonder if this isn't a dry run/psyops by the radical islamofascists to let us know that they can probably get to the HUMAN food supply?

I've always said that allowing our agricultural land to be converted to housing and thus our food supply line to move off shore is a strategic blunder.

My solution is to buy quality products although I admit I was under the impression that eukanuba was (I knew Iams was cheapened). Now I know P&G bought out both of them and cannot be trusted irregardless of government inspections. My main pet food for a while has been wellness diet.

It doesn't seem to matter if we do buy premium brands since it's all made by Menu Foods. What a ripoff.

Now I wonder with every meal if I'm poisoning the cat or the dog or both even though they both eat dry food. Ugh!

Here's a really informative site, to help people figure out which companies use Menu to manufacture their pet foods:

According to posters at the Pet Connection site, Menu Foods does not produce dry food, so if there is a problem with dry food, Menu Foods is not to blame.

Of course, that means someone else is, and we don't know who yet. Ugh.

Why we, or Canada, buy food from CHINA when we have so much food, grain and other natural substances on this side of the ocean boggles the mind. If companies would buy American grains maybe the farmers wouldn't be inclined to demand subsidies.

Heck, WE probably sold the grain to China in the first place. I still think the whole incident was a dry run for terrorism toward humans...most pointedly--babies.

Help! Can someone please recommend a high quality food not on the list? I feed Nutro "dry" to my dogs but I am really worried that it is also contaminated. I've tried Wellness brand and my dogs do not do well on it.

On another note, we don't seem to produce anything here anymore -- everything comes from China. Many of their household items are total crap, so why would their food products be anything different? Considering the fact that they skin domestic dogs alive for use as fur coat collars, I am sure that they could care less what they are shipping us for pet food.

I've been complaining about that for years, but according to Adam Smith, we sell them T-Bills to fund our budget deficit and they sell us cheap crap and it all works out.

Bottom line in all of this.

Be very careful when buying food items, human or pet, from 3rd world countries.
