FDA finds another poison in the recalled Pet Food -Presser @ 10:00 am EDT

"Testing by the FDA and at least one lab independent of the agency found melamine, a chemical used in plastics and household textiles, in samples of the recalled pet food and in one of its ingredients -- wheat gluten -- said an FDA official and another source close to the investigation. Neither wanted to be identified prior to the FDA's formal announcement this morning."

"The FDA has not determined how melamine got into the pet food. Melamine is used as a fertilizer in Asia and has several commercial and industrial uses."

Just curious, how. I've fed raw for over 9 years and never had a sick dog. Of all the raw feeders I've known over the years one breeder on our natural cocker list who had a problem with chicken, but I don't feed chicken to my dogs. There was someone who said it could happen if you feed kibble with raw because kibble digests so much slower than raw and can cause the raw to stay in the body longer than need be. A research expert on another list says cats should be at least partially cooked, however.

Maybe that explains why most people have reported their pets didn't want to eat the food before they did eat and got sick.

Go to onlynaturalpet.com... all the foods there are natural and not on the recall list. They sell a food that is 100% natural called Nature's Logic that would be my recommendation.

I'll take my cat well done please. (Not going to say anything about the rude synonym...not going to do it...willpower...)

I haven't been following this other than to see what the comtamination was and how it happened. If that's what folks are reporting, I would say the levels are reletively high, and didn't come from something like bad manufacturing/packaging/shipping practice. I hope they give the levels/ratios tomorrow. Since the food was wet, it would have had an ammonia taste. That's much worse than old fish, which cats go for.

One person (who's dog died) reported on the pet connection site she opened a can and something white was in the middle of the food.. the dog didn't want to eat it and she opened another can.... for some reason she saved the food and it's in her freezer waiting for something the FDA is sending her to send it to them -- Menu wanted it sent to them and she is sending to the FDA. There is a vet tech on another list I'm on and she is reporting their office overwhelmed with sick dogs... many who eat kibble, not canned food.

My vet a year ago told me, after a steer fed a 14% steer grower ration died from Vit B deficiency, that if I wanted to have healthy cattle, I would need to feed supplemental brewers yeast to my cows. Seems possible the vet already knew something was up. Isn't that an effect of aminopterin?

The contamination was supposed to be on the wheat gluten. Something white in the final product would be inconsistant with that. If the melamine was high enough to cause that, the dog never would have ate it, and it never would have gone out of Menu's plant, because it would have stunk also. The dog owner would have noted it. The melamine really isn't bad and takes a lot to kill, because it's just urea/ammonia.

The real killer is the aminopterin. Did you take a look at hte WIKI link I posted. It's a very toxic drug used here as an anti-cancer drug. It would kill anything long term.

I agree with you and I also believe there is more going on than we know (yet)... it's time people wake up to what is bound to happen if we insist on pushing out the farmers and start importing more and more of our food stuffs. This could be the canary in the coal mine scenario.

Thanks so much for this information. That is good to know. I'm going to give my yorkie some boiled chicken and rice tomorrow. Hopefully it will help. Hopefully he will eat it. It's kind of strange how I am hearing about other pets getting ill which have not eaten from the list. It seems too much of a coincidence. But, I pray it's just that.

Yes. It wouldn't take them this long to figure out what was in there. I think the makers of the food waited too long and ignored the signs it was bad. I think the feds know someone in red China tossed in some "spice" and they're hesitating, because they're pondering deliberate, or accidental. Probably a "diplomacy" thing.

If you are correct, and I have no doubt you may be... that is even scarier because people's pets are dying as a result.

Someone posted last week on a pet list a copy of a document from Menu Foods, released before Christmas indicating they had a problem and specifying it was not to be released in the US.

Things like this have happened in the US also. That's why they have seals on pkgs and more oversight in the food/drug plants. I don't necessarily mean govm't oversight either. The CN plants and any ones in the US should have noticed this if they had brains. The pH of the food would have been funny and a cause to stop and determine what was wrong. Apparently they have morons in charge of their mngmnt and QC.

There is some excellent lists on yahoo you can join and learn to cook a healthy diet for your dog. You don't need dog food for a small dog like you have and he/she will be much healthier for it.

It has become easy to go to the store and buy, but when you read what they are putting into the food, including using 3-D meat, I think we all love our pets too much to feed them that food.

Right now if he is nauseated see if he will eat small bites of unsweetened apple sauce. Apple pectin binds with toxins in the body, which is one reason it will settle a stomach so well. I would give my dogs a homeopathic remedy, too.... there has been a lot of discussion on one of the homeopathic lists about the correct remedy for this since it affects the kidneys.

My cat gets Purina One.

So is that safe? What is? Can we get a list of non-poisined pet foods?

First it was spinach, now this. I guess this is the 'PNAC' the left has been complaining about?

You mean the food was not to be realesed to the US? If so, why was it?

No, the report that there might be a contamination issue with their food was not for release to the USA. I know what list I saw this report on, I'll find it tomorrow and ping you. I'm off to bed now.... nite.

Purina foods are crud... read the API report on What is really in pet food, you'll soon see what I mean.....this isn't a new report, it's been kept updated and the food companies have not been able to force it off the net because they are telling it like it is -- I read this after I lost a dog to cancer and soon learned how to read labels on pet food.... not a pretty picture when you learn how to actually know what they are trying not to tell us on those labels:

API Report
