Frist says Thompson ‘very aggressively’ considering ’08 run
Nashville City Paper ^ | 03/30/07 | Jared Allen

Bill Frist doesn’t know who is going to win the 2008 Republican primary, let alone the final list of candidates. One thing Frist does know for sure is if his friend and former U.S. Senate colleague Fred Thompson decides to enter the race, he will be “very, very supportive” of a Thompson candidacy.

But with some polls showing Thompson, Tennessee’s second-most-recent former Republican senator, in third place among GOP presidential hopefuls – only weeks after he first hinted that he was considering running for president – talk of Fred Thompson dominated much of Frist’s visit.

Frist confirmed much of the speculation surrounding comments Thompson first made on Fox News Sunday – in which the Law and Order star and movie actor noted that he was thinking of throwing his hat in the campaign ring – by saying he and Thompson have talked at least every other day about a multitude of issues, including a presidential run.

It was just weeks ago, as well, that Frist formally announced that he would not be running for president in 2008.

“He recognizes that at this point in history, people want somebody who can communicate effectively, who can communicate directly, who can cut through a lot of the rhetoric,” Frist said of Thompson. “And Fred can do just that.”

“Over the next several weeks, and it could even be months, he’s going to continue to consider it very, very aggressively,” Frist added.

I'm intrigued by the idea of Thompson running, but if he's tight with that weak-kneed, Beltway smitten, do-nothing politician Frist, in addtion to McVain, then I have some serious doubts about Fred's ability to lead the conservative charge.

If Fred is going to run and win he will need the cooperation and support of all Republicans (plus some others). Also, Fred and Frist are from the same state, so one would expect a gentleman (and especially a Southern gentleman) to show good manners. I'm not worried that Fred is talking with the former Senate Majority Leader. Frist might have some good advice. If we trust Fred to be President, we can trust him to listen to people who we don't necessarily want in leadership positions, but who nonetheless might have valuable insights and connections.

Fred is probably the only Republican I'd vote for, for President in 2008.

"I don't know, I heard once that Thompson did not come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Such disrepect of the law has to raise questions about his suitability for the Presidency."

Yes, but he had already stopped twice for the previous one...Stop sign offsets, and all, don't ya' know.

Very good work, thank you. It will make it easier to pass information along to others who are disgusted with those running so far.

SE MOM:

Are you noticing a common theme in reports about Fred? Like he may wait a while, even months, before announcing? It's being well emphasized, it seems, in nearly every article.

I wonder if he's trying to psych the opposition into thinking he won't run, or total confusion?

:O)

:) Here's my take- based on nothing but my perspective and what I've read. He has contractual obligations with ABC Radio and Law & Order. If he's going to run- he'll have to work through some legal contract issues. That's one part of the scenario. The other one- simply put- a lot of folks are getting his name out there NOW without his even announcing an exploratory committee.

Doesn't cost a penny.

My hunch- he'll meet in 2 weeks with the Congressmen on the Hill who want to talk with him- tie up some other business...and come out in May.

However- the suspense building may force his hand a little sooner than May.

God knows it's killing me!!!!

As well he might, just so long as he doesn't make judgments about Fred's belief's without knowing anything about him.

Actually, he paid me $10 for the offset I created that time I stopped longer at a stop sign than I technically had to, to let another car go through from a different direction.

I might be running
I'm 'very aggressivly' considering running.

Hell man ... just announce and get into the arena already :)

Fred's got my vote. Well, he does unless he does something really really stupid.
