Animal rights group calls for broader pet food recall (Dry Food)

Animal rights advocates are calling on federal food safety regulators and pet food companies to expand a nationwide recall of dog and cat food to include dry varieties, claiming they make pets sick. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it had no plans to suggest a wider recall to pet food companies, and veterinarians said they have not seen a trend of animals becoming ill after eating dry pet food.

As I have posted on other threads for days, My cats are differently sick from eating dry food. I wont mention the brand as I have in other threads. I caution all pet owners to watch their pets closely if you are feeding them dry food.

My cat eats the dry Iams cat food and continues to thrive on it. I watch her closely and she has all of the energy in the world. There is no increased intake of water or any other sign that she has been harmed by eating the dry food.

My eight-yr-old cat suddenely died three weeks ago after eating dry dog food (Nutro). This was before the recall was announced. The our first thought was, "he must have eaten something, but all he ever ate was dry food - so how could that happen?" He was simply lying on his side under the porch, no signs of trauma, no visible signs of ANYTHING. Just dead...

Now we're really wondering. He died so suddenly we didn't have any warning.

I'm calling my vet today to ask if it was possible for him to die from eating tainted dry food. Like you, I wonder how they know the tainted product was only in the wet food if they don't know what the tainted product IS (they said they didn't know how the amnopterin got in there). It would certainly be prudent to test all the food to make sure that the poison in question is NOT in the dry foods as well. I have never sued anyone for any reason, so this is purely out of interest for the safety of the food supply - for ALL of us.

My dog died Wed night. He was 2 years old and healthy. He vomited once during day Wed, but showed no other signs of illness, running, playing, we woke up Thursday am and he was dead. We only fed him dry food, Gravy Train. I wanted to get autopsy, but my hubby didn't. We were sure it wasn't the food because we never feed him canned.

My cats ate Iams for 7-8 years (their entire life). I bought a new bag last Saturday that, IMHO, made them sick. I stopped the Iams Tuesday night, and gave them a mixture of Nutro, and ProPlan. They seem better today. At least they are not still laying on the floor barely moving. I called Iams Monday and filed a complaint with product codes, etc.. Let me say, it could have been a flu bug, but I feel the food caused the problem.

I live in Panama, and most of the cat and dog foods (dried and canned) are U.S. brands but made in Central and/or South America. The only cans I have on the shelves that come directly from the U.S. is Friskies. This does not mean, though, that those made outside the U.S. aren’t using some of the same tainted ingredients.

For now, I have mostly switched over to boiled chicken breasts, raw ground beef, canned tuna fish, and anything else they like that is not pet food. My cats may not be getting a good balanced diet at the moment but hopefully they will be safe for now.

I asked by cats’ vets about this poisoning situation two weeks ago, if they had noticed it here in Panama, and I got a blank look which made me even that much more worried.

I've been feeding Purina One for years. The dogs are 14 and 16 and the cat is almost 6. No signs of food related illness in any of them.

I've been feeding mine Pedigree dry and wet, does anyone know if that's on the list? As I've gotten older and my kids grew I've become the crazy dog lady that I used to make fun of. These dogs are like my babies and if they get sick...I'll die

How interesting......... It occurred to me that since some of the most extreme animal rights folks don't believe we should have pets (like those who wanted Knut the polar bear cub dead), that that is how the food could have been poisoned.

It seems pretty obvious to me that if all pets are slaves, if you free them, there is a big problem with wild dogs and also feral cats eating birds, so the answer - - murder them.

I hate to jump to conclusions, but a week before the flareup with the wet food, my dog started vomiting small amounts every couple of days or so.
Nothing spectacular about that since dogs are known to sample strange things, and he does spend some time outside when it's time for his business.

I've been watching him more closely, but it hasn't gotten worse and he seems otherwise OK. He is still eating the same brand, since a change of diet about a year ago really upset his digestive system.

Waiting for developments.

I've been reading these threads with increasing alarm. There is a publication, The Whole Dog Journal, that puts out a list of the dog foods with the highest quality ingredients. Those of you who have cats could contact the companies below for info on feline products. Here is the 2006 version:
