WASHINGTON - President Bush on Wednesday withdrew the ambassadorial nomination of businessman Sam Fox after Democrats denounced Fox for giving money to a controversial conservative group that undermined Sen. John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign.
Kerry, D-Mass., had criticized Fox because of a $50,000 contribution that Fox made in 2004 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
Many Democrats blame the group for sinking Kerry's presidential hopes that year after it aired a series of controversial ads that impugned Kerry's military record in the Vietnam War.
"Sam Fox had every opportunity to disavow the politics of personal destruction and to embrace the truth," Kerry said Wednesday. "He chose not to. The White House made the right decision to withdraw the nomination. I hope this signals a new day in political discourse."

If and when the Republican party stop acting like quivering pantywaists about to wet their drawers with fear, I'll take them seriously.
Talk about surrendering before there's even a fight. Appeasing the left has been the name of the game so long that the Republican party (generally speaking) seems to have a fatal case of the Stockholm syndrome.
Good points. I agree that we need to be more aggressive at making our own news coverage on our terms.
None of that explains why Fox was nominated in the first place...... simply to give the loathsome 'Rats an opportunity to smear the SwiftBoat Vets and hit the WH with a smackdown?? Where was the vetting of the candidate - this was an obvious issue for the Defeatocrats, and if the WH was willing to nominate the man then they should have gone into this with their eyes open, ready to fight for his confirmation. This is not the sort of case where some obscure, unexpected issue materializes out of nowhere.
Maybe it is all
Rove jiu jitsu-- Let the 'Rats
impeach Bush and then
let Hillary spend
eight years as vice president
and then eight more years
as president and
then the Republicans will
really start fighting!
The standard overview is an FBI background check and job competence. It's not at all unrealistic that he'd miss something like this.
The rats would start impeachment proceedings instantly if he even suggested attacking Iran.
Actually, the administration should dig up every person and issue that they think the dems would have a hissy fit over and bombard the bastards with everything all at once just to demonstrate to the public what the democrat game is all about and then fight them over every single one...no quarter given.
I thought he owed it to the voters. WHO KNEW!
What's 'controversial' about the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Democrats find anything that brings the truth to the American people as controversial. They're sick and we are in trouble.
Please, President Bush ran a very good campaign and held a flawless convention. Then there's that little issue regarding National Guard and of course bin Laden's pre-election statement. All that followed by the citizens on this country flocking to the polls to vote for him.
Kerry was his own worst enemy and the Swiftboaters helped to point that out. But that was more a part of him bungling his own campaign to Bush's benefit.
I think you're the one who's clueless, not me.
What would posess you to think they wouldn't do everything in their power to stop W from having another military success, when they're hell bent on making the current ones a failure, no matter the disastrous position they'll put the world in?
