Harvard University, which prides itself on promoting racial diversity, is facing scrutiny for running an athletic department devoid of black leadership. Not one of the 32 head coaches guiding Harvard's intercollegiate sports programs is African-American. Nor is the athletic director or his 13 senior administrators.
The absence of black leadership was particularly striking to equal-opportunity advocates because of Harvard's distinguished stature in higher education and the school's claim that it funds "the nation's largest Division 1 athletic program."

Look, here's what you don't understand about all this:
HARVAAAAD is a citidel of the RULING ELITES! They tell the REST OF US WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO LIVE. That DOES NOT mean THEY must do the same.

Yet they probably support affirmative action (quotas) for students and everyone else. The usual liberal do I say, not as I do mentality.
Ivy colleges are not competitive in athletics. Their recruiting (or non-recruiting) rules are so stringent that they can't go after the big high school players. Only if you happen to have an athlete with good grades who wants to come to an Ivy (and can get in) do they get one.
Why would a black coach, who is in high demand and can write his own ticket to coach at a large competitive school in one of the big conferences, want to coach at a school where he can't recruit, will have lousy players (except possibly in prep school sports like lacrosse), and will never be heard from in the national press? The Crimson boys can cajole and beg all they want, will make no difference.
. . . now admittedly I'm working from 30 year old information, since that's when I graduated from an Ivy (not Harvard). But that was the situation then, and I don't think it's changed. My roomies and I tried out for the 150-pound football squad, we placed 1-2-3-4 in the 100 yard dash, but they still wouldn't take us (we could have done them some good, two of my roomies were field hockey players of renown, and the material they had to work with was pretty poor, after the 'real' football team took anybody who could actually play.)

I think back to the mid-70s and busing for desegregation done here in NC, with a fair amount of violent reaction. Northern liberals were quick to take note of the "racial hatred" in the South. A couple of years later Boston started busing, and the reaction down here paled to the riots that took place in Boston. I think that liberals are far more racist than conservatives ever would want to be (with a few exceptions). Liberals operate from the assumption that some Americans (i.e., blacks and the "poor") cannot provide for themselves, no matter how hard they try. Conservatives, at least most of us, assume that anyone, given a certain level of education and drive, can succeed. Bush's "soft bigotry of low expectations" phrase was a masterstroke. Whoever wrote it for him should be publicly thanked.
You make excellent points. However, the fact that there are no, or an insufficient number of, qualified minority candidates is not an excuse in most circumstances. Our office has tried to hire minority candidates for years. We have hired marginal people from time to time, but they do not last, for various reasons. But, as far as professionals in our office go, we are still lily white, despite our best efforts. It doesn't stop the criticism, though.

Maybe there were no qualified candidates for the job. I doubt it with those numbers, but we should hire based on qualifications, not skin color.
I would suspect an intelligent, clean, and articulate black coach would want to avoid moving to Massachusetts and paying their onerous income taxes....
The Boston experience is one I cite whenever some effete Yankee -- and I hail from Cleveland originally -- starts rubbing my nose in the "slavery" or "bussing" thing. Boortz often declares that it's common knowledge that a black kid cannot learn unless he's sittung next to a WHITE kid.
Black folks will come out of the economic cellar when they hurl their devastating culture of ganksta rap, hip-hop and all the rest into the trash where it belongs and STOP falling for the victimization crap their Democrat "massas" use to manipulate them. That will destroy his nation -- if it hasn't already -- more quickly and thoroughly than cohorts of radical muslims in airplanes.
I now live in the Deep South and raised my kids here (thank God!) and have a far more enlightened view of that history.
And if you want to know the REAL history of the War Between the States, go to the site below. But be prepared to throw out EVERYTHING you learned in school on the topic. History is, after all, written by the victors.

Exchaning efficiency and excellence for mediocrity, in the name of 'multicultrualism', is never a good idea. Stop trying to destroy your own company for the sake of PC and just look for the very best out there, no matter what color. That's the ONLY way to be truly "color blind".
