Let’s settle this once and for all...
Having done actual research on this subject to get to the truth, I’ve concluded that Sen. Thompson a) is, and has always been, opposed to the notion of a constitutional right to an abortion; b) is, and has always been, in favor of banning partial-birth abortion; c) is, and has always been, in favor of restrictions on most later-term abortions (post-first trimester); and d) is now across-the-board pro-life, but in the 1990s, was in favor of earlier-term abortions (first-trimester) remaining legal...
If you pick up the 1994 post-election edition of National Right to Life news, you’ll see a list of pro-life Senators elected in the class of ‘94. Thomspon was on the list, with a cross by it.
The cross stood for Thompson’s support for legal 1st Trimester abortion. He was generally pro-life, but supported abortion during the 1st trimester...
As such, Thompson’s voting record is consistent with his 1994 position: he’s pro-life on everything other than making first-trimester abortions illegal...
What seems to be clear is that Thompson has never supported the constitutional right to an abortion, has never supported partial-birth abortion, and has never been opposed to restrictions on post-first-trimester abortions. Further, Thompson’s opposition to Roe means that he’d have no problem with states prohibiting or regulating first-trimester abortions. Thompson has only parted with pro-lifers on first-trimester abortions, a stance that a) may have since changed over the past decade and that b) is moot for all practical purposes, as sufficient political support for banning these abortions at the federal level just doesn’t exist regardless of what the Supreme Court does.

Really? When did Russert interview him? I'd love a link to that! Just the thought of Russert trying his intimidation on Thompson fills me with delight!
But out of the top three candidates, Thompson is the only one who has seen the light.

Funny how now that Fred Thompson appears to be a viable candidate, he's being held to a higher standard of scrutiny than the others.
Rudy... yay.. he's our guy.

Fred... hmmm, exactly where does he stand on the issues?
Why wouldn't it be?? Killing babies is murder, no matter who advocates it. But dear Rudy has other negatives, too---notably his stances on stealing guns, and kissing up to queers--to name only two.
The author of this piece seems to be defending Thompson against bloggers who are claiming Thompson is pro-abortion.

I don't know, it seems to me an almost viral way of telling people he actually is for first-trimester abortions.. if you look at a lot of the political viral attacks over the past few elections, you will see patterns where they plan info but then add a few lines here and there to cause doubt or try to split people...
This may be nothing, but I know there are a lot of people out there who would love nothing more than to see our side split and are threatened by a possible candidate that could unite our side again..

for someone like me our country is great when our country is good. When we cease to be good it puts at peril the things that make it great. Abortion is immoral and is impacting our economy, our future and the moral underpinnings of our future. We are quite literally killing the generation that will inherit this country and and instead are giving it away to people who do not embrace - as I've already said - the things that made us great.

Labor leaders recently gathered in Las Vegas to lay the groundwork for the 2008 elections. They're pretty open about their battle plan, folks.
John Sweeney, the big gun of the AFL-CIO, is promising the next election cycle will see the "greatest involvement" ever from big labor. (And that's a hefty promise, considering what unions did for Democrats last time.)
In their "get-out-every-kook vote," unions spent $100 million. They contacted tens of millions of voters by phone and by mail. They conducted a door-to-door intimidation exerscise -- uh, "canvassing effort." (Sorry.) Political action committees also spent $60 million; that's up 11 percent from the previous election cycle.
So that 160 million bucks does not include, though, the tens of millions Democrats raised from other sources, like George Soros, or other political action committees and think tanks run by Clinton-machine guys like Serpent Head and The Forehead -- James Carville and Paul Begala.
So, you conservative activists out there, consider this an early warning. For now, quit worrying about the nomination. John McCain and Russ Feingold stripped the Republican Party of major resources when so-called Campaign Finance Reform was signed into law. It didn't get the money out of politics -- it got Republicans out of office! Your immediate job is to figure out now -- not next year -- how to raise the money and build the organizations you need to get your message to voters.
Back during the campaign finance debate, I said money is the "mothers milk" of politics. It was true then, it's true now -- and you can take that all the way to the dairy case!
We were warned.
Why? It seems to be very important to Rudyphiles, since they continually lie about Thompson's record.
Actually, in that interview, he did seem less than anxious to elaborate.
Would Thompson lead the fight for a national ban on abortion?
What's his position on the morning after pill?
How about embryonic stem cell research?
Has he changed his position on early term abortions?
