"The latest military intelligence data point to heightened U.S. military preparations for both an air and ground operation against Iran," the official said, adding that the Pentagon has probably not yet made a final decision as to when an attack will be launched.

He said the Pentagon is looking for a way to deliver a strike against Iran "that would enable the Americans to bring the country to its knees at minimal cost."

He also said the U.S. Naval presence in the Persian Gulf has for the first time in the past four years reached the level that existed shortly before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

We like to think of it as a "surge".

The first wave should be a smart bomb through the bedroom window of every mullah in the country at about 4 am.

Russian news agencies / newspapers / magazines seem to have a habit of making sensational claims like this in the style of Debka.

Pinch of salt.

a ground assualt by Iran

Have to say that would be catastrophic for Iran. Tragic and stunning, too.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

Russians stirring the pot if you ask me. I don't trust them at all. My bet is they are telling the "truth" and at the same time giving away our secrets, at the same time they are pissing off Iran.

Very strange that the Russia is the "good cop" and the US is the "bad cop" in this episode.

anybody familiar with this Russian source.

assuming its true, then the Iranians probably are starting to feel a little squeezed with the naval presence in the Gulf and along their borderS. Maybe pressured enough to do something rash . . . like snag 15 UK sailors
